Natural Preservative Systems: Organic Preservatives
Last November, ingredient supplier Lonza (Allendale, NJ) announced that its Geogard Ultra preservative had been approved for use in Ecocert organic products. With 74% of its makeup naturally derived from corn, Geogard Ultra is an active blend of gluconolactone and sodium benzoate. “It is a broad spectrum system comprising ingredients that have been used in the food industry for decades,” says Rosita Nunez, manager, commercial development, preservatives, for Lonza.
The preservative is suited for both rinse-off and leave-on personal care products, including shampoo and conditioner. It is typically included as 1.0 to 2.0% of a product’s formula as a stand-alone preservative system, says Nunez, but it can also be used successfully at lower levels (0.25% to 1.0%) when combined with other synthetic or natural preservatives, preferably good bactericides. It can be used over a wide pH range of 3 to 7.
Another supplier, Vitiva (Markovci, Slovenia), announced that it is offering EU organic-approved preservatives—organic versions of its all-natural rosemary preservatives. These rosemary preservatives include the company’s Inolens and AquaRox preservative lines, which protect the fats and oils used in cosmetics.
The Inolens line protects cosmetic products against rancidity, color alterations, and taste change. Inolens products are highly deodorized, greatly reducing their bitterness, which is important for products such as lipstick, says Dushka Dimitrijevic, product manager for Vitiva. Dimitrijevic adds, “Inolens products not only outperform vitamin E and synthetic antirancidity preservatives like BHA and HT, they also have no influence on appearance, odor, color, and texture of final products.”
Vitiva’s water-soluble AquaRox products protect cosmetic formulations from oxidation that can lead to product breakdown and development of undesirable odors and colors.
