Curved Seal

A unit-dose packaging supplier has introduced the option of a curved “radius seal” for the ends of its patented plastic ampules. The seal adds a stylish, high-end look to the plastic ampules, which are made from PE or PP. A gentle squeeze of the ampule breaks an inner plastic membrane that seals in the contents prior to use. Another squeeze then dispenses the product.

New PET Jars

New sizes of 2, 3, and 4 oz have been added to a supplier’s line of PET wide-mouth personal care jars. The complete range of jars, all with 58-mm neck finishes, now spans jar sizes from 2 to 32 oz. The new, smaller PET jar sizes are ideal for high-end personal care and bath products, as well as for travel-size products. The new jars were built using the same 18-g preform and are offered in standard colors of clear, white, dark amber, light amber, dark green, and cobalt blue.

From the Inside Out

A company has introduced a new technique for decorating cosmetic components such as thick-walled caps and bottles—and even narrower items such as lipstick container caps. The new technique, which Rexam calls Illusion, involves lacquering the interior of a component with opaque, metallized, or transparent colors. Laser decoration can also be used. After lacquering, the decoration is heat cured. The technique is an alternative to overmolding or two-part assembly, and can be applied to a wide range of the most commonly used beauty packaging materials, such as ABS, PMMA, and SAN.

Antimicrobial Labels

Earlier this year, a firm announced that it could mold bottles and jars with an antimicrobial surface that helps to ward off bacteria. Recently, the supplier announced that it has worked with UK-based Royston Labels to also produce antimicrobial labels. The antimicrobial property is achieved by adding ionic silver, which inhibits fungal growth. It is clinically proven to kill over 99.99% of bacteria such as MRSA, E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria within 24 hours, and it is effective over the lifetime of a package. The supplier also says that the additive is food-safe and has no effect on a container’s contents. The additive can be incorporated in SAN, PP, PET, and HDPE packaging.

Metallic Shrink Sleeves

Metallic effects, including “color changing” designs, are now available for a supplier’s shrink sleeves. The color-change effects are the result of special inks that can be rotogravure or flexographic printed. Other looks include glittery and reflective effects.

Stock Makeup Packaging

A supplier has launched two new standard makeup packaging lines. One line is called P-R-O by Cosfibel. It is a nine-SKU range that includes airless dispensers, a click pen with the option of five different applicator tips, and a thin dispensing vial resembling a test tube or a syringe. The line’s high-end clinical look was inspired by the cosmetic surgery industry. The second line, called Crystal Sharp, is an 11-SKU range that includes components for lipstick, mascara, lip gloss, blush, and powder. It features matte bases and shiny lids.
