Green Packaging: Lightweighting Options
Alcan Packaging’s new Access Denied cap is the tamper-evident version of the supplier’s lightweight Slender cap.
Seaquist Closures (Mukwonago, WI) offers a complete line of snap-on tube-top closures that are ideal for personal care packaging. One of its new lightweight 2-in. tube closures, called Classic Ultra, averages 25% less weight than most 2-in. tube-top closures on the market, according to DeAnn Umland, product manager, personal care and household. “Our customers are getting the best of both worlds. Our new closures have an updated look and a lower weight,” says Umland.
Continental Packaging Solutions (Chicago) has introduced a new stock lightweight cap. It is currently being used on the supplier’s industrial containers. This concept can be applied to containers for beauty products with ease, according to Robert Zurek, director of marketing. “Source reduction is definitely a way to make a package more eco-friendly,” he says.
Alpha Packaging (St. Louis) is in the process of reengineering some of its straight-sided stock PET jars, with the goal of lightweighting them by up to 15%. This is being achieved by changing the cores inside the jars’ molds. “Lightweight cores allow us to use less resin to blow-mold the jars,” says Marny Bielefeldt, marketing manager. The supplier is still in the testing stage but plans to have many options ready by the fourth quarter of this year. “We’ve already completed initial prototyping for select jar styles,” Bielefeldt adds.
Alcan Packaging (New York City) offers a lightweight polypropylene flip-top cap for a tube called Slender. Its extreme transparency conveys a high-tech, modern image. Access Denied is Alcan Packaging’s lightweight tamper-evident version of the Slender cap. This cap eliminates the need for a plastic shrink-sleeve. Instead, it has a user-friendly tear-off band that is integrated into the cap, showing whether or not the package has been opened.
