CPC Packaging's 2008 Packager of the Year - 2008 Notable Launches: An Innovative One-Handed-Use Lipstick Case
Pro-To-Go lipstick was designed to allow the user to easily open the package using only one hand. Sliding a button up on the side of the case with the thumb causes a lid to flip open as the lipstick bullet slides up. Sliding the button down makes the bullet retract.
The idea for the ingenious package was inspired by consumer research presented by Avon’s innovations group, PILOT. “The team identified the consumer’s desire for a lipstick that could be used with one hand,” says Jeff Wass, executive director of global new product and package engineering, Avon Products.
Avon’s director of global package design, Patricia Demnisky-Green, and her design team created the model for this package. The lipstick case was designed without a separate cap. “We wanted it to be as small as possible, which was quite a challenge for Jeff’s team,” she says.
Wass and his team of engineers were faced with the task of making sure that the lipstick package would open and close effortlessly. “This was a completely mechanical production process, because there were a lot of little parts and components that needed to fit together,” says Wass.
Developing the package, to the start of production, took 12 months. “We all had a vision and are proud that the end result turned out fabulous,” says Demnisky-Green.
