CPC Packaging's 2008 Packager of the Year - 2008 Notable Launches: The Challenge of Engineering a Dual-Chambered Jar
Avon ANEW Rejuvenate 24-Hour Eye Moisturizer is packaged in an innovative dual-chambered jar. This jar was first used for Avon’s Clinical Eye Lift last year. “It was an engineering accomplishment when it was first introduced because a dual-well, curved-center-wall jar had never been done before,” explains Jeff Wass, executive director of global new product and package engineering.
The dual-wall jar contains two different compartments filled with two different products. The jar has asymmetrical walls and an asymmetrical seal. The seal has cutouts in the shape of a sun and a moon, letting the consumer know which product to use for day and night.
The design team, led by director of global package design Patricia Demnisky-Green, was faced with the challenge of figuring out how to make sure the two wells were the right size to contain the right amount of product, while ensuring that the package was still user-friendly. “We had to make sure that the consumer would be able to get all the product out easily,” says Demnisky-Green. The design team worked closely with engineering to achieve this. Wass’s team worked closely with suppliers to address any further concerns.
