Postconsumer Packaging
M&H Plastics (Beccles, Suffolk, UK) provided 100% postconsumer (PCR) PET bottles for the new Patently Obvious line of hand washes, foamers, shower gels, and hand sanitizers from personal care brand KMI.
“When we started developing this range, we wanted to create natural, environmentally friendly cleansing products made and manufactured in the UK, with no compromise on performance and design,” said Andrew Hill, KMI’s managing director.
The products themselves are eco-friendly formulas with natural ingredients and no parabens. The packaging was inspired by the look of flasks, test tubes, and bottles used by chemists.
“KMI has demonstrated that PCR packaging can look stunning while being kind to the environment,” says Shaun Catchpole, new business development manager for M&H Plastics.
Lotion Pump
Pfeiffer GmbH (Radolfzell, Germany) provided its Cremosa lotion pump for Clarins’s Cleansing Milk line of personal care products.
The Cremosa pump is available in two versions, one to dispense lotion and another to dispense gel products. The Cremosa lotion pump is available with a 24-410 neck finish and in dosage volumes of 0.28 and 0.50 ml. The Cremosa gel pump features a 20-410 neck finish and a dosage volume of 0.20 ml.
Deliciously Vintage (Expanded Online Version)
The on10 cosmetics brand has become known for its lip balms inspired by the scents, flavors, and vintage artwork of classic candy and beverage brands such as The Hershey Co., Dr. Pepper, and Schweppes Ginger Ale. (The brand is the “older sister” to the Lotta Luv brand, known for its teen and tween cosmetics inspired by famous candy brands.) This fall exclusively at Sephora, on10 launched a new collection of packaging for its line featuring images of old-fashion pinup girls.
“The pinup girl art is original ‘Schweppicure’ art from Cadbury Schweppes’ archives,” says Eileen Rappaport, senior vice president for on10. “These ‘ladies’ were part of the advertising for Schweppes in those vintage years. The Schweppicure women are circa 1920 through 1940.”
Packaging components include tins, a round retro-looking compact, and lip balm tubes. For a gift set, a pinup girl image was screen printing onto a gold metallic clutch. “Printing on the clutch was straightforward, and printing on tin was also easy,” says Rappaport. “Our biggest challenge was printing the foil wrap on our Green Glam Gloss SKU (a product still to be launched.) Because the lip balm pot is made of cardboard, the foil stamping didn’t adhere as well as we wanted it to. We are also working with our factory to make sure that each pot is filled low enough so that the lip balm doesn’t ‘spill over.’”
“The timing is right for this type of line because vintage is everywhere and nostalgia makes customers feel comfortable and takes them back to the good old days,” adds Rappaport. “These Schweppes women were very stylish, and the dresses and glamour are what is driving fashion at the moment, so it all ties together beautifully.”
Trigger Style
KMS California’s new HairPlay Sea Salt Spray, designed to give hair texture, features a trigger-style pump in a custom color.
According to Anja Martens, vice president of KMS global marketing, “The trigger pump was chosen over other spray pumps because it performs perfectly in regards to delivering a forceful but fine spray pattern.”
She adds, “The pump itself is also easy to handle, provides a nice grip, and offers a security closure that is awesome when traveling.”
Dispensers
For John Freida’s Luxurious Volume products—All-Out Hold hairspray, Bountiful Body Mousse, and Lavish Lift Root Booster—SeaquistPerfect Dispensing (Cary, IL) provided three gold-colored dispensers with a sparkly effect created in the mold.
For All-Out Hold hairspray’s aluminum can, the supplier provided its VX valve and XL200 spray actuator, as well as a clear overcap. For Bountiful Body Mousse’s aluminum can, the company its S16 spout. Finally, for Lavish Lift Root Booster’s blue plastic bottle, the firm provided its EM Classic spray pump.
Exotic Look
Design firm QSLD New World (Paris) designed graphics for Guerlain’s new Terracotta limited-edition press-powder compacts.
According to QSLD president Denis Boudard, the graphics were inspired by faraway locales. “Capturing the effect of the setting sun of Africa, India, and the Orient, which reveals a unique beauty of intense coppery tones, the shades of these exotic origins provide an irresistible deep-bronzed sheen that we had to display,” he says.
Twisted Design
TricorBraun (St. Louis) helped to design and produce a bottle with a twisted contour for California Tan, a manufacturer of professional suntan lotion products.
The bottle’s design was first sketched by Carin Castelnuovo-Tedesco, California Tan’s vice president of creative services. From there, TricorBraun’s design and engineering department took over. The firm sourced seven custom-designed components from international suppliers to achieve the final package.
“TricorBraun worked with our quality-control division to have the parts delivered in a way that was the simplest to put together,” says Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
Packaging Makeover
TricorBraun (St. Louis) helped to redesign the packaging for Salon Selectives, giving the packaging a more modern look.
The supplier provided an 8-oz high-density polyethylene bottle with a pump for a root-lifting spray. Some of the line’s hair were packaged in a 1.7-oz PET bottle with a spray pump and were further packaged in a blister card. Other packages in the line include an 8-oz PET bottle with a foamer pump and a 2-oz SAN jar with a polypropylene lid.
TricorBraun also provided the labels and oversaw color-matching.
Square Shape
For Warren-Tricomi’s Style Hot-Set Spray hair care product, SeaquistPerfect Dispensing (Cary, IL) provided its Euromist HV spray pump, highlighted by a matte silver metal collar. The company also supplied a large square overcap that matches the square shape of the product’s bottle.
