Packaging Resource Center: HBA Global Expo
A packed conference program focuses on packaging, ingredients, and natural products.
The next edition of HBA Global Expo is gearing up with a full conference schedule that promises information about all aspects of the beauty industry. The three-day event is set to return to New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on September 9–11.
With more than 50 sessions and 200 speakers, HBA’s conferences will be divided into three conference tracks: marketing, technical, and naturals. With today’s top trends in mind, many conferences will focus on natural and organic products and sustainability. Conferences will also cover business development strategies, brand enhancement, package design, skin care and hair care advancements, as well as high-performance ingredients and technical solutions.
Packaging sessions are part of the marketing track, which offers 25 sessions. In this track, information will also be given on design and display, marketing and strategic brand development, and industry trends and forecasts.
Sessions of interest to package designers, package executives, and engineers include Sustainable Packaging Initiatives, The Strategic Use of Design and Display, Meet the Package Designers: A Roundtable Discussion, and Labels: What the Outside Says about the Inside, led by Holly Young, president and CEO of Hirschhorn + Young Graphics.
CPC Packaging editor Jennifer Kwok will moderate a conference on contract packaging called Contract Packaging Do’s and Don’ts. More companies are choosing contract packaging as they strive to find efficient, cost-effective methods of packaging. Tips on using a contract packager will be provided by speakers Anthony Gentile, director of art and marketing for Xela Pack; Ronald P. Pontolilo, vice president of sales for Jacobson Companies; and Kevin Sweeney, national sales director for Access Business Group.
Another conference of interest is titled Make Your Packaging a Supermodel That Gets into Every Magazine: What They Are Looking for. Hosted by editors of various consumer magazines, this conference will teach brand owners how to design a package that editors will choose to feature in their publications.
Other education highlights include HBA’s full-day workshops. One of them, the third annual International Safety, Regulatory, and Certification Summit, will provide insight on labeling and certified-organic regulations.
The Fragrance Business Conference also returns. The event will focus on building fragrance product brands and provide ideas on how to restructure and reshape fragrance businesses.
Still other current topics being covered by the marketing program include the growing men’s grooming and personal care markets; the teen and tween market; and growing business opportunities in Latin America, the Middle East, Russia, India, and China. New media platforms for promotions, merchandising, and integrated marketing will also be covered.
HBA also puts new package designs and services at attendees’ fingertips. More than 600 exhibitors will be showcased on the trade show floor.

Serum Bottles
A small bottle with an applicator nozzle was designed for serum products—or any product that must be applied in a small, precise dose. Instead of requiring customers to break off or cut off the top of the nozzle, the nozzle’s overcap can be used to puncture the top of the nozzle. Users must simply apply light pressure on the cap, and a tool on the cap will penetrate the top of the nozzle, creating an opening for product to flow through. The cap and nozzle are made from PP, while the bottle is molded from PE. Bottles are available in round or oval shapes, in sizes of 3, 5, and 10 ml. Custom colors and silk-screening are possible.

Recycled Grocery Bags
A supplier’s Double G cosmetic bags are made from 100% postconsumer recycled (PCR) grocery bags collected from the streets of India. If not collected, these bags often litter India’s streets and clog its drainage systems. In addition, the project creates jobs for India’s local women, who collect the bags from the streets. All bags go through a nontoxic cleaning process. They are then stripped and pressed into the material used to create the Double G bags. No dyes or inks are added to the material.
