Business Beat: Demand for Cosmetic and Toiletry Containers Expected to Grow

U.S. demand for cosmetic and toiletry containers is projected to increase 2.8% per year to 25.5 billion units in 2012, The Freedonia Group reported in its latest Cosmetic & Toiletry Containers study. Sales will rise yearly to $4.4 billion.

Among types of materials, plastic will see the fastest growth through the year 2012. According to the study, continued improvements to plastic aesthetics and performance will cause the use of plastic to expand further into the prestige market.

The study adds that although more moderate prospects are anticipated for paperboard, glass, and metal containers, growth opportunities still exist. For instance, says the study, advances in full-body shaping for metal cans will broaden the range of applications for aluminum aerosol containers. While demand for folding cartons will be constrained by efforts to reduce packaging, cartons will continue to be in demand for prestige goods.

Finally, the study says, health care, skin care, and oral care were the three largest markets in 2007, together accounting for more than two-thirds of demand for cosmetic and toiletry containers. Through 2012, the study anticipates the fastest growth for the skin care and liquid soap markets.
