Show Coverage: The Packaging Summit
Sustainable package development, outsourcing take center stage.
Organizers of The Packaging Summit Expo and Conference have focused the 2008 show on such evolving issues as environmentally friendly packaging and contract packaging. The annual show will be held May 13–15 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL.
The show’s three-day conference program will feature speakers from market forces such as Wal-Mart, General Mills, and DuPont. One notable conference will be a discussion of Wal-Mart’s global packaging reduction strategy. This session will be led by Paul Lewellen, senior director, supplier development, for Wal-Mart International Merchandising. This keynote session will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14. Lewellen will discuss Wal-Mart’s Packaging Scorecard and its status in the United States. He will also address how the scorecard’s international applications are driving changes in packaging.
Other sustainable topics to be covered include how consumers perceive sustainability, how to analyze the value of sustainable materials, and how to merge profitability and sustainability.
Contract packaging will also be a focus at the conference. Specific topics include how to effectively outsource packaging operations to China, how to integrate contract packaging in a company’s business plan, and how to formulate key questions to ask contract packagers.
The show’s exhibitors will focus on developments in packaging components, containers, and materials. Items to be displayed include labels, sleeves, bottles, pumps, sprayers, bags, and more. Visit www.pkgsummit.com for complete details.
Exhibitor Products
Reusable Bag
The Schick shaving brand chose a supplier’s vinyl bag to replace a clamshell package. Because the bag is reusable, it was considered more environmentally friendly than the clamshell. The bag features satin seams and a braided-rope handle that was designed to hang from a retail display. The brand’s logo was debossed on the bag. Imex Vinyl Packaging, Matthews, NC.
Security Solutions
A supplier provides security solutions to prevent package theft in stores. For the item pictured, the firm was able to design an EAS tag that was hidden under the package’s butterfly-shaped accessory. The firm’s security packages and tags can also be designed to be biodegradable. Secure Sales Solutions, West St. Paul, MN.
