Luxury Skin Care for Men
Zirh’s new Platinum line provides men with luxury skin care products in sleek, contemporary packaging. “The combination of black and silver is extremely upscale and inline with the positioning of Platinum,” says Brian Robinson, president of Zirh Holdings LLC.
Airless dispensers protect the products’ active ingredients. Packaging suppliers include Rexam (Suresnes, France) and ATP Health & Beauty Care (Stratford, CT).
Weathered Finish
Anomatic Corp. (Newark, OH) used metal anodizing to create a weathered, vintage finish on the caps for Abercrombie & Fitch’s Hollister Sessions personal care line.
“Our team was able to create [a look] that until now no one has been able to accomplish through anodizing,” says Scott Rusch, Anomatic’s executive vice president.
Cloth Covering
Gap Inc. chose Holliston LLC’s (Church Hill, TN) Pearl Linen 100% cotton cloth to adorn the cartons for its new GapBody fragrance line.
The material can be decorated using offset printing and foil stamping. It is suited for sheet-fed applications as well as scoring, die-cutting, and laminating.
Avon Dispenser
Rexam (Purchase, NY) created a custom bottle for Avon’s Anew Ultimate Age Repair Elixir. The gold, injection-blown polypropylene bottle is surrounded by clear PCTG copolyester.
The package also features Rexam’s SP343 pump, which the supplier says is suitable for the most aggressive product formulas and requires no precompression. A custom polypropylene actuator and collar were molded and vacuum metallized.
Applicator Tube
Alcan Packaging Beauty’s (New York City) Artist Brush tube was selected for YSL’s Gloss Repulpant lip plumper.
The tube features an automatic on/off valve system and a soft brush. Silk-screening, hot stamping, and a metallic gold cap were also provided.
M-Pak Sprayer
PalmBay Health & Beauty LLC chose Packaging Concepts’ (Boynton Beach, FL) M-Pak sprayer for its shaving oil. PalmBay managing director Bob McCabe says that the one-piece leakproof sprayer was a good choice for the product. “A 1.0-oz M-Pak sprayer of PalmBay Shave Oil will provide more than three months of [product],” he says.
Packaging Concepts also formulated the 100% natural oil formula enhanced with Vitamin E and grape seed oil. McCabe says that the oil is more lubricating and hydrating than shaving foams, gels, and creams.
Unique Bottle Shapes
RPC Group (Northants, UK) provided tapered bottles for the relaunch of the Florena personal care line. The bottles are made from transparent polypropylene and PET and house items such as shower gel and bubble bath.
Display Box
Cosfibel Group (Paris; New York City) provided its Pop Box for Cacharel’s sample-sized fragrance kit. The box features a transparent casing, which is capped on either side with paperboard.
Thanks to a thermoformed insert, the miniature bottles appear to float in the carton. A reflective gold board sits on the carton’s bottom.
Crystal Cap Décor
Skin care marketer Summersent decorated the cap for its body cream jar with Swarovski crystals.
Jeweler Belladonna Jewellery (Concord, ON, Canada) glued on the crystals by hand. Diana Freiman was in charge of design. “The jeweled cap continues our brand’s [sense of] opulence and femininity,” says Summersent’s president and founder Marjorie Kitzrow.
Green Packaging
The Naturally Clear Skin body care line has been made over with custom-green packages with metallic bronze accents.
Package distributor Team Packaging Inc. (Arlington Heights, IL) sourced the packaging components. “The challenge was making sure that we were able to provide a premium-quality product that would be sold at a price point under $10,” says says Romina Brown, president of Strategic Solutions, the line’s owner. “Team Packaging chose widely available bottles and used complementary effects such as metallic borders [to decorate them].”
Team Packaging also sourced an eco-friendly sample package for the line from Xela Pack (Saline, MI). The 15-ml Coupon Pack is 75% paper and features a tear-off tab at the top that serves as a coupon.
Mascara Brush
Supplier Alcan Packaging Beauty’s (New York City) innovation center developed a custom brush for Bourjois’s Volume Clubbing mascara.
The mascara brush features two rows of fibers. According to Alcan Packaging Beauty, this design allows the brush to simultaneously coat eyelashes with mascara while combing them.
Volume Clubbing’s bottle and cap were completely decorated with metallic transfer film.
Hard Candy Cap
An oversized jewel-shaped Surlyn cap is the star of Hard Candy Cosmetics’ debut fragrance bottle. The cap was created from DuPont Surlyn, which is ideal for molding unique shapes.
“The design freedom that Surlyn provides makes it the obvious choice for packaging like this,” says Nick Gardner, vice president of sales for supplier HCT Packaging (Bridgewater, NJ), which supplied the cap. “It provides clarity, good chemical resistance, and ultimately, the look and feel of a high-end piece.”
Aluminum Shell
Seidel GmbH (Marburg, Germany) created a brushed-aluminum half shell for Lacoste’s new Elegance fragrance. Seidel also created a matching silver aluminum cap, which was debossed with Lacoste’s crocodile logo.
In addition to manufacturing the metal components, Seidel assembled the aluminum shell onto the bottle on an automatic assembly line.
Getting Graphic
Italian fashion house Pucci commemorated its 60th anniversary with a special fragrance bottle whose domed cap was decorated to resemble one of Pucci’s famous scarf patterns.
Supplier Rexam (Suresnes, France) injection-molded the Surlyn cap. The decorative pattern was pad printed on the underside of the cap by Printing International.
Kid-Friendly Foam
Indonesia firm PT Lion Wings selected foam dispensers for its Kodomo brand of children’s body washes and shampoos. The firm chose Rexam Dispensing Systems’ (Alkmaar, The Netherlands) WRD4 water-resistant foamer, part of the WaterGuard dispenser family.
Department Store Line
Parfum d’image (Levallois-Perret, France) helped European retailer Galeries Lafayette create its own private-label personal care line. Called Aventure des Sens, the line features 57 SKUs and includes bath and body products, fragrances, soaps, candles, and incense.
Stock components were used throughout the line. “We chose pure and simple shapes,” says Sophie Thiolas of Parfum d’image. European suppliers were chosen, including PET Power (Etten-Leur, The Netherlands) and M&H Plastics (Beccles, Suffolk, UK) for the line’s bottles and jars; Emsar (Chieti, Italy) for the pumps; and Seaquist Closures (Morley Leeds, UK) for the caps. Travel-kit pouches were produced in China.
Double-Ended Design
Pur Minerals chose a double-ended package for its Pur-ly Abundant eyelash/eyebrow treatment products.
One bottle contains a product that creates the appearance of thicker, fuller eyelashes or eyebrows. “A doe-foot applicator was specifically selected to help deliver the active ingredients to the ‘root of the problem’—where eyelashes and eyebrow hair originate—safely and without allowing the formula to enter the eyes,” says a company representative.
The other bottle houses a primer that thickens and conditions eyelashes and eyebrows. The stock package was supplied by Compax (Salt Lake City).
Tropical Appeal
Hair care brand Moroccanoil uses brown and teal packaging. “We wanted the packaging to have a Mediterranean feel,” says Carmen Tal, executive vice president of sales and marketing. “The blue turquoise is symbolic of the sea and the sky. The brown has an earthy tone.”
The amber glass bottles protect the products from oxidation, which was especially crucial for the products containing natural oils.
For an oil treatment product, the brand chose an unusual bottle inspired by the pharmaceutical industry. “Rather than use a typical cosmetic container, we wanted more pharmaceutical-looking container to help convey the treatment benefits of Moroccanoil,” says Tal.
Ralph Lauren Cap
Risdon(Watertown, CT) produced the Surlyn caps for Ralph Lauren’s Ralph Wild fragrance bottles. It produced 12 molds for the project.
Dispensers
SeaquistPerfect Dispensing (Cary, IL) provided body spray dispensers for American Eagle Outfitters’s men’s cologne line.
The dark brown bottle for American Eagle Real is topped with the supplier’s hoodless Moritz click-and-lock actuator, while the American Eagle 77 bottle features the hoodless Vail click-and-lock actuator.
Customized Skin Care
The My Blend skin care line lets users customize their skin care formulations by offering a selection of additives that can be mixed with any of the line’s creams. Each additive offers a specific skin care solution.
The creams are housed in bottles and jars, while the additives are provided in unit-dose syringes. MBF Plastiques (Oyonnax, France), a specialist in plastic injection molding, supplied bottles, tubes, and jars for the line. The jar features a methyl polymethacrylate base and a Surlyn lid. The supplier made 17 separate molds for the line.
Dressed to Impress
Gerresheimer AG (Düsseldorf, Germany) provided 50- and 75-ml glass bottles for Diesel’s Fuel for Life men’s and women’s fragrances. The women’s bottle is adorned with open-weave cloth, while the men’s bottle is wrapped in a canvas sleeve.
Cool Blue
Azur has launched an antiaging moisturizing sunscreen that the company says won’t sting or burn the eyes. For packaging, the brand chose custom-blue tubes.
“We couldn’t find the right blue in any of the standard colors, so we used different percentages of concentration to get this specific shade,” says brand founder Gilles Godin. Godin says that the blue color has helped build brand recognition. Azur used the blue shade on everything from primary and secondary packaging to marketing materials. Achieving color consistency across different packaging materials was a challenge, says Godin.
