Lauder Executive Provides Tips on Green Packaging

With the sustainable packaging market still in its early stages, package designers must be resourceful. That was the message behind the keynote speech delivered at the recent The Packaging Summit conference by John Delfausse, vice president of packaging development at The Estée Lauder Companies.

Delfausse discussed some of the challenges he often faces when developing sustainable packages for Estée Lauder. “When you’re designing for the environment, everything isn’t perfect or there yet,” he said. “Designing for the environment is a journey. Everything you do is new and innovative. You have to just take those first steps. If you wait for a perfect solution, you’ll never get there.”

He continued, “I believe we can all find ‘win win win’ solutions. That means that you can design a quality package that will leave a better environmental footprint on the planet. It will also meet marketing and design criteria. Most importantly, it can be produced at either the same or a better cost.”

Delfausse often speaks to groups to inspire other packaging executives to take on the challenge of what he calls “designing for the environment.” His speech, titled “Innovation: The Answer to Sustainable Packaging,” was presented in Rosemont, IL, on May 15, during his keynote speech at The Packaging Summit in Rosemont.
