Show Coverage: Luxe Pack New York
Highlights include CPC Packaging’s annual Editors’ Choice Awards ceremony.
Suppliers report that demand for unit-dose and sample packaging is up. To accommodate this trend, several suppliers have even expanded their facilities.
James Alexander Corp. (Blairstown, NJ) added 10,000 sq ft to its plant. “With an influx of new business this past year, we really needed the additional space,” says Francesca Fazzolari, president and CEO. Likewise, Flexpaq (South Plainfield, NJ) has installed advanced equipment to support its growing contract filling program. Dimensional Merchandising Inc. (DMI; Wharton, NJ) has established additional high-speed filling lines for small-sized bottles.
Luxury beauty products call for upscale packaging. In May, the Luxe Pack New York trade show caters to this market.
In addition to its exhibitors, Luxe Pack New York will host several conferences on the current state of luxury packaging. On Wednesday, May 23, famed industrial designer Karim Rashid will present a conference called Democratic Beauty. Rashid, whose clients have included personal care brand Method Home, will discuss how new packaging technologies, materials, and production methods can produce well-designed packaging for both luxury and mass-market products.
Also on Wednesday, designer Marc Rosen will host a conference, When the Package Becomes the Brand, which covers how brands can design iconic packaging.
On Wednesday night, Luxe Pack will once again host CPC Packaging’s annual Editors’ Choice Awards ceremony. To read about the winners who will be honored, turn to our awards coverage starting on page 34 of this issue.
On Thursday, May 24, Nicole Smith, environmental director of Design & Source Productions Inc., will speak about sustainable packaging for the luxury market, such as the use of bioplastics and postconsumer-recycled fabrics and pulps. Smith currently teaches a course on this topic at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Luxe Pack New York takes place May 23–24 at New York’s Metropolitan Pavilion. For more information on the show, please visit www.luxepacknewyork.com.
EXHIBITOR PRODUCTS
Nea Lotion Pump

A supplier calls its latest dispensing innovation the Nea lotion pump. Designed for viscous and sensitive skin care products, this ergonomic pump contains no elastomers, features a glass ball, and has a metal-free fluid pathway. At its booth #36 at Luxe Pack New York, the supplier will also display a new fragrance pump with a transparent dip tube. Rexam Dispensing Systems, Purchase, NY.
Dip Tube

Used for products such as Banana Republic’s Discover fragrance collection, a supplier’s NoC dip tube features proprietary light-refracting technology that makes it appear invisible when submerged in a fragrance. The dip tube is available on the supplier’s low-profile Melodie sprayer, whose engine remains hidden in a bottle’s neck. MeadWestvaco Calmar, Grandview, MO.
Over-Molding

Among other innovations, a supplier will demonstrate its new over-molding decorating technique. This technique was used for the Lolita Lempica Au Masculin fragrance bottle, which was over-molded with dark-green faux leather. First, fabric was cut and placed in the mold. The mold was then used by the company to create front and rear injection-molded polypropylene half shells. After injection molding, the parts emerged from the mold clad in the faux leather. A galvanized polypropylene top and bottom hold the two half shells together around the blow-molded bottle. Alcan Packaging Beauty, New York, NY.
Anodized Container

Part of the Jardin Enchanté makeup collection, a Lise Watier lipstick case was made from metal. The case’s gunmetal color was achieved by anodizing. A new mechanism was developed so that the case could be manufactured in one piece. The brand’s name was hot stamped on, and a silver medallion was added to the cap’s top. Axilone USA, a div. of Ileos, New York, NY.
Dior Cap, Collar

A redesigned closure was created for Christian Dior’s Airflash makeup. Launched in 2005, Airflash originally featured a translucent plastic cap. The new aluminum closure comprises a shiny silver collar that was laser-engraved with the brand’s logo, as well as a deep-blue cap embossed with the Dior logo. Seidel GmbH + Co., Marburg, Germany.
Cartons
A carton converter offers advanced printing processes and a wide range of finishing capabilities. For decorating, the supplier provides a range of specialty inks and coatings; textured, matte, and glossy finishes; metallic, foil, and holographic laminates; embossing and debossing; and UV and spot coating. It operates a sheet-fed gravure press. Wilco Inc., Candiac, QC, Canada.
Dispensing Solutions

A company’s dispenser line includes the Metropolitan and Cremosa pumps, designed by DieterBakicEnterprises; the Classic dispenser line for cosmetics; and the Inspiration and Progress pumps for fragrances. The ModulArt pump (pictured) is the supplier’s latest patent-pending development. With ModulArt, only the pump’s outer shell must be customized. The lockable pump also allows for convenient, one-handed use. Pfeiffer, Radolfzell, Germany.
Stock, Custom Components

A firm designs and manufactures stock and custom components for fragrance, skin care, and color cosmetic packaging. It specializes in injection molding, extrusion blow-molding, and secondary processes such as electroplating and spraying. Materials used include paper, plastic, Zamac, and fabric. Its high-end metal packages, especially those in aluminum, have been used by some of the industry’s most prestigious beauty brands. Qualipac America, Wayne, NJ.
Paris Hilton Bottle

For the Paris Hilton Heiress fragrance, a supplier created a unique bottle that features an eye-catching holographic plaque. One technical challenge for the company was UV-gluing the hologram to the plaque. This could have been done by hand, but specific pieces of equipment were designed to automate production. In addition, the plaque has a mirrored surface and required protection from scratching. Bormioli Rocco USA, New York, NY.
Secondary Packaging

Since 1980, a firm has specialized in plastic secondary packaging, which can be combined with paperboard, wood, and metal. Styles include injection-molded secondary packaging, folded boxes, vacuum-formed platforms, and setup boxes. More than 120 stock designs are available such as rectangular, square, round, and oval boxes; tubes; and luxury cases. Custom designs are also offered. Dapy Paris, New York, NY.
Cosmetic Components Made from Metal
A supplier produces metal caps, collars, medallions, and overshells. In-house capabilities include stamping, heat treating, burnishing, plating, and finishing. The company works in high volumes and offers quick turnaround. International Metal Products Inc., Chicopee, MA.
Luxurious Shopping Bag

A paper shopping bag was created for a Dolce & Gabbana fragrance promotion. The bag’s foil paper was custom colored gold. A high-gloss finish coats the bag’s outside, while the inside is lined with a strong card backing. Hot stamping was combined with embossing to give the Dolce & Gabbana logo a three-dimensional quality. To hide the bag’s folding lines in the bag’s gusset, the firm used its Janus technology. The bag’s handles are black semirigid cords that were custom woven and that feel like natural cotton. Interconti Systems Inc., La Jolla, CA.
Custom Capabilities

A supplier created a custom-designed brass compact and insert for Lancôme’s Color Design Pop Cherub eye shadow palette. The decoration includes embossing on the compact’s lid and hot stamping on the ABS insert. The firm also produced slim aluminum packages for Sephora’s brand-name lipstick and highlighter products. Cosfibel Inc., New York, NY.
Lip Balm Tube

A supplier’s new plastic tube is designed especially for lip balm. A metal cap completes the package. The tube can be decorated with a clear label or be screen-printed with graphics. Various fill sizes are available. Cameo Metal Products, Brooklyn, NY.
