Applications: Changing Colors

Fusion Blend’s bottle is clear plastic; the color-changing effect comes from the product itself.

With Hawaiian Tropic’s new Fusion Blend tanning spray, customers’ complexions won’t be the only thing changing color. Thanks to a unique formulation, the product itself appears to change color in an eye-catching way.

Developed by Hawaiian Tropic’s research lab in Ormond Beach, FL, the formula comprises two parts: an orange part and a purple part. When the bottle is shaken, the two formulas blend together to form a tan-colored product. When customers then spray on the product, they receive the combined benefits of both formulas.

“Products that mix to activate have been in the marketplace for years, but we believe this is the first use of the technology in sun care,” says Steve Burdette, product manager for Hawaiian Tropic. “The idea was not so much about a product that changes color, but to present consumers with a fun, innovative way to tan.”

After being mixed, the two parts eventually settle and separate into what Hawaiian Tropic calls the “ground state.” The orange part rises to the top of the bottle, and the purple part sinks to the bottom.

Hawaiian Tropic calls the orange formula the “orange phase.” According to the company, the orange phase intensifies the quality and appearance of a tan through a combination of shine enhancers and amino acids. It is also enriched with carrot oil and betacarotene and contains the product’s unique Citrus Blast fragrance.

The “purple phase” is a hydrating mix and has a mild cooling effect. It contains a moisturizing complex made of aloe vera and glycerin. “These proven moisturizers work with the orange phase to draw moisture from the environment and ensure that needed moisture will not, and cannot, escape,” says Burdette. He adds that while both formulas contain sunscreens, providing SPF 4 as stand-alone products, the consumer’s experience is better when the products are mixed.

Hawaiian Tropic’s lab experimented with a number of different color combinations before deciding on orange and purple. “We wanted colors that looked appealing and energetic on the shelf, but the colors also needed to form a pleasing, tan-oriented hue,” says Burdette.

The company designed a clear, 8-oz PVC bottle to show off the product’s colors. The bottle was produced by the firm’s production facility in Ormond Beach and features molded curves representing sunrays. The purple fine-mist pump is SeaquistPerfect Dispensing’s (Cary, IL) EuroMist model.

Fusion Blend launched at the beginning of this year and is sure to turn customers’ heads.
