On Display--Metal Packaging: Bright Designs in Metal

Winning Design

A cap for the Daytona 500 fragrance by Elizabeth Arden was modeled after the look of a racecar tire. A round anodized red metal piece, meant to represent a tire rim, was fitted into the top of the cap assembly. A metal actuator protrudes through the center of the cap. To top it off, black thermoplastic elastomer was embossed with the Daytona 500 logo and used to replicate the look of a rubber tire. Crown Risdon, Watertown, CT.

Variety in Metal

A supplier’s packaging line includes aluminum bottles, jars, and lids in a wide variety of sizes. Pumps and sprayers can be provided with aluminum collars. Metal packages are available in matte and glossy finishes. SR Packaging Inc., Fengyuan, Taiwan.

Inspired by Soccer

The Gillette Co. selected custom-shaped aerosol cans for its Mach3Turbo shaving gel, Gillette Series shaving gel, and Gillette Series antiperspirant and deodorant. The 200-ml limited-edition cans were designed to resemble a soccer ball to coincide with the 2006 FIFA World Cup tournament, which Gillette sponsors. The cans’ contours are comfortable and easy to grip. The shape was achieved using the supplier’s blowforming process, which begins with preforms placed in precision engineering molds to create a desired shape. The preform is blowformed using high-pressure air, causing it to expand into the shape of the mold. Crown Holdings Inc., Philadelphia, PA.

Aluminum Jars

Aluminum jars can be ordered in small quantities. The jars are available in six sizes ranging from 15 to 125 ml. Suited for creams, gels, salts, and candles, the jars can help add shelf appeal to products in the cosmetic and personal care market. Elemental Container Inc., Union, NJ.

Very Cool Pumps

Super-low-profile pumps adorn the bottles for the Very Cool Tommy Bahama fragrances for men and women by Gemini Cosmetics. The pumps feature the supplier’s patented The Crimpless System as well as metal collars and metal-sleeved actuators. The women’s actuator was anodized in a matte satiny silver finish, while the men’s is gunmetal gray. The dispensers fit the fragrances’ 1.7- and 3.4-oz bottles. Rexam Dispensing Systems, Purchase, NY.

Brushed Aluminum

A brushed-aluminum bottle suited for personal care products has been added to a supplier’s permanent stock line. The bottle is available in sizes of 80 and 120 ml. Both versions have a 24-410 neck finish suited to a fine-mist sprayer, a minitrigger sprayer, or a lotion pump. An epoxy phenolic coating lines the inside of the bottles for product protection. McKernan Packaging Clearing House, Reno, NV.

Shapely Body

Christopher Philip Ltd. selected a supplier’s BodyShapes shaped aluminum can for its Gentleman’s Youth Maintenance (GYM) personal care line. The 7.6-oz can was used to house the line’s Finish Style Control Spray. BodyShapes allows for top-to-bottom shaping of rigid aluminum containers. According to the supplier, custom contours and curves could only previously be done on the upper portion of an aluminum container. CCL Container, Hermitage, PA.

Double-Walled Closure

A company has introduced a new double-walled metal closure. The closure measures 35.5 mm in diameter and is available in neck finishes of 20-400, 20-410, and 20-415 to accommodate most 2- and 4-oz plastic bottles. The supplier also offers bottles to match the cap. Cameo Metal Products Inc., Brooklyn, NY.

Aluminum Range

Continuous-threaded aluminum jars are suited for gels, creams, and balms. Available in sizes of 15, 30, 50, 75, and 100 ml, the jars were designed to combine functionality and style. Clear and colored finishes can be applied. Lids can be embossed or debossed. Roberts Metal Packaging, Peckham, London, UK.
