Show Coverage: Cosmoprof

In April, Cosmoprof, one of the world’s largest cosmetic industry trade shows, returns to the Fairground District in Bologna, Italy. The show’s organizers have announced a major change to the show’s dates. In past years, Cosmoprof has run concurrently with its packaging show, Cosmopack. This year, Cosmopack will start and end one day earlier than the rest of the Cosmoprof show. The dates for Cosmopack will be April 6–9, while Cosmoprof will take place April 7–10.
Opening Cosmopack one day before Cosmoprof will allow show attendees a day to focus solely on cosmetic packaging, say show organizers. They have dubbed April 6 Cosmopack Day and have scheduled several events to take place during the day in order to facilitate interaction between packaging suppliers and the industry.
To kick off the day on April 6, an inauguration ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., a roundtable discussion called Packaging Dynamics in the Perfumery and Cosmetic Market will be held. Speakers expected to take part in the roundtable discussion include Dieter Bakic, general manager of DieterBakicEnterprises; Michel Dupuis, senior vice president of purchasing for Chanel; Hervé Bouix of Estée Lauder’s innovation department; Guiseppe Meana, general manager for Cartografica Pusterla; Christian Saclier, global head of packaging for Novartis Consumer Health SA; and James Thorpe, general manager for HCT Packaging.
At 3:00 p.m., visitors can attend a symposium about point-of-purchase retailing called Why Merchandising? The symposium will present findings from a survey about international point-of-purchase retailing trends for perfumes. The session will be presented by the international association Point of Purchase Advertising International (POPAI) and analysis firm TradeLab.
As usual, Cosmopack’s many exhibitors will showcase packaging products, technologies, and services, as well as raw materials. Last year, the entire Cosmoprof show attracted 2111 exhibitors and 137,247 visitors from 130 countries. For more information on attending Cosmoprof and Cosmopack, visit www.cosmoprof.com.

Bicolored Design

The 250-ml Kimono bottle was designed for skin, hair, and sun care products. The bottle can be supplied in a range of materials and with numerous types of decoration. Kimono’s most striking feature is its bicolored effect, which is produced by layering. The bottle’s thicker, inner layer is made from standard polyethylene in a white pearlescent finish. The thinner outer layer is made from high-gloss polyethylene that can be colored using a masterbatch of a brand’s choice. The Kimono bottle can be supplied with the company’s new Lupo flip-top closure, as well as with a variety of screw-on caps. DieterBakicEnterprises, Munich, Germany.

Magnetic Design

A supplier produced the bottles for Jean Paul Gaultier’s Gaultier2 fragrance, as well as for the fragrance’s body oil line. The rectangular fragrance bottles feature angled corners and smooth, flat surfaces. The bottle’s decorating required five separate stages. First, the bottles were finished using what the supplier calls a thermoluster technique, and then the fragrance’s logo was silk-screened on. Next, lacquering and varnishing were applied. Finally, on the back of the bottle, four magnets were glued on to allow two bottles to be attached back to back. Saint-Gobain Desjonquères, New York, NY.

In 2005, the company also opened a manufacturing facility in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to manufacture dispensers for the North American market. Recent launches include Pure Path Technology, which features a metal-free fluid path that maintains a product’s integrity by keeping a dispenser’s metal spring out of contact with a product. The compact features four covered product wells, each of which features a small hole through which customers can insert a brush to access the product. Nodules on the inside of the compact’s lid plug the holes when the compact is closed, keeping the powder sealed inside the wells. Each well holds 0.25 g of product. Two additional chambers on the compact are designed to provide customers with an area to mix and blend the powders. The mixing wells are lined with a pulp and vinyl seal liner to create a surface that aids in breaking down the dense powders. HCT Packaging Inc., Bridgewater, NJ.
