John Delfausse Speaks to CIBS

John Delfausse

John Delfausse, vice president of packaging for Estée Lauder, spoke at the Cosmetic Industry Buyers and Suppliers (CIBS) luncheon held February 15. Delfausse is responsible for global packaging for Lauder’s Aveda, Origins, Bobbi Brown, and Stila brands.

Delfausse spoke to attendees about his passion for sustainable packaging and using recycled materials. “I’ve been working in the industry for 35 years, but the last six have been the most exciting of my career,” he said. “When I first joined Aveda and learned about the brand’s tremendous environmental mission, it challenged me to become more innovative. I would like to challenge all of you now to become more involved and to encourage everyone to think more about sustainable packaging. CIBS Elects Board of Directors

CIBS has announced its newly elected 2006 board of directors. At the association’s January 4 meeting, CIBS’s new president William Standwill welcomed new members and thanked departing president Deborah Danis for her contributions to the organization.

Several significant changes to the board were announced. Michael Warford left his position as treasurer to become vice president. Former recording secretary Beth Mount succeeds Warford as treasurer. Fran Cardiff was named recording secretary, and Charles Marchese was named corresponding secretary.

Other changes were announced, including a change in location for the association’s monthly luncheons. Beginning in March, the luncheons will be held at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City.

The 28-member board includes CPC Packaging publisher Patricia Spinner (who is missing from the photograph on page 20), who will serve as general program chairperson. Coty Reorganizes

Coty Inc. has announced several staff appointments for its new Coty Prestige division.

Jean Mortier, formerly of Unilever Cosmetics International, has been appointed senior vice president, commercial, and will lead the sales organization of Coty Prestige Worldwide. Mortier is based in Europe and reports to Michele Scannavini, president of the Coty Prestige division. “Our new organization has been planned and developed to give all our brands the chance to achieve their highest potential with the right treatment and support,” says Scannavini.

Changes have also been made to the way Coty’s U.S. teams are organized. Bob Cankes has been appointed president of Coty Prestige North America. Janice Vitale has been appointed senior vice president, trade marketing, for the Coty U.S. division. Vitale reports directly to Cankes. Previously, Vitale was vice president, retail development and trade marketing, for Unilever Cosmetics.

In order to better serve its retailers in today’s evolving retail environment, Coty has also created two Prestige U.S. sales divisions. The Prestige department stores division will be led by Dominic Pisani, senior vice president, sales, and it is divided into five geographic regions. Coty has also established a specialty stores division, with the intention to strengthen its presence in the prestige segment. It will be led by Dennis Keogh, senior vice president, specialty stores. This division will serve Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Ave., Lord & Taylor, and specialty boutiques.

CTFA’s Annual Meeting

The Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association’s 2006 annual meeting took place March 1–3 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Florida. Representatives from many CTFA member companies attended, including those from Avon Products, Coty, Elizabeth Arden, The Estée Lauder Companies, Revlon, L’Oréal USA, Mary Kay, and Procter & Gamble Cosmetics.

Pamela Bailey

During the general session on Thursday, March 2, CTFA president Pamela Bailey spoke to attendees. The session’s opening remarks were given by William Gentner, meeting chair. Marc Pritchard, president, global cosmetics and personal care for Procter & Gamble, delivered the CTFA chair’s speech.

This year’s keynote address, which was about the future of retailing, was given by Bob Mettler, chair, Macy’s West. Mettler has 30 years of experience in the retail industry and is known for his innovative merchandising methods.

Lenka Contreras

Lenka Contreras, vice president of Kline & Co., presented “The Changing Dynamics of Beauty Retailing” during a conference on Thursday, March 2. Contreras discussed how consumers’ shopping habits are changing. She also spoke about several trends happening across different retail channels. Kline & Co. provides market analysis, business assessment, and strategic planning for a broad range of products relating to the global cosmetics industry.

Contreras highlighted some specific points during her conference session. She brought to attention the fact that department stores are seeing increased sales from teenage consumers who are attracted to the image of high-end brands such as Gucci and Chanel. “When teenagers increase their income, there’s a good chance they will become department store customers because they are easily persuaded by designer images,” she said.

Contreras also said that some of the outlets that had good sales during the late 1990s, such as Limited Brands, have been experiencing slow sales. “This is causing stores like Bath & Body Works [part of Limited Brands] to experiment by offering different items in their stores,” she said.

Overall, Contreras pointed out, consumers are becoming more savvy and shopping at lower-end retail outlets, which are not necessarily low-end anymore. “Retail outlets such as Target and Kohl’s are offering more quality products and attracting new customers with different, more trendy items,” she added.

How will packaging be affected by these retailing trends? Contreras answered, “Packaging is critical and plays a role in attracting new customers. A package can also completely change a customer’s perception of a product by making it look more upscale.”

Andrea Robinson

The Estée Lauder Companies has named Andrea Robinson president of Tom Ford Beauty and president of Prescriptives Worldwide. Robinson reports to John Demsey, global brand president for the Estée Lauder and MAC brands.

“Andrea has done such a brilliant job on the Tom Ford Estée Lauder collection—the holiday fragrance and makeup products were a complete success,” said Demsey. “It is a natural progression that she should lead the Tom Ford Beauty brand.”

At Prescriptives, Robinson replaces Lynne Greene as president. Greene was recently named president of Clinique Worldwide. Demsey will now oversee Prescriptives, the Estée Lauder brand, MAC, Tom Ford Beauty, and Sean John Fragrances.

Joseph Gubernick

To assume her new roles, Robinson will leave her most recently held position as chief marketing officer at Estée Lauder. Joseph Gubernick will replace Robinson in this role. He will lead global marketing for the Estée Lauder brand of skin care, makeup, and fragrance products.

Noël Ancian

Noël Ancian has been named chairman and CEO of Ileos. Ileos is a specialist in luxury cosmetic packaging. Ileos comprises subsidiaries Alliora, Axilone, Packart, Pixxent, Rotanotice, Seufert, and Socoplan/Flexpaq.

Alcan Inc. confirmed the appointment of Richard Evans as president and CEO. Previously, Evans served as executive vice president and COO. Evans succeeds Travis Engen, who is retiring.

World Wide Packaging has made several staff appointments. Jeffrey M. Hayet is now vice president of the firm’s plastic tube division. Most recently, Hayet served as director of North American sales for CCL Plastic Industries. Rick Weisbrod has been named vice president, contract manufacturing. Previously, Weisbrod was vice president of operations for Del Laboratories.

Michael E. Spinapolice

DMI, a contract manufacturer and packager of color cosmetic, personal care, and over-the-counter products, has promoted Michael E. Spinapolice to the position of vice president, product development.

McKernan Packaging Clearing House has appointed Jim Lemmons to the position of general manager. In addition, Bill Dennison has been named the company’s wholesale purchasing manager.

Don Kane

Curtis Packaging, a supplier of custom specialty folding cartons, has named Don Kane senior account executive, cosmetic and personal care products.

Avery Dennison RFID, a supplier of RFID solutions, has appointed George Reynolds vice president of sales and marketing.

The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) has added three new members to its board of directors: Tim Cook, vice president of sales and marketing for AMF Automation Technologies; Nick Wilson, president of Morrison Container Handling Solutions; and Paul Irvine, CEO of Plexpack Corp.

Packaging supplier O-I has named Greg W. Ridder president of the firm’s Asia Pacific operations. Ridder succeeds Peter Robinson.

NatureWorks LLC, a supplier of polymers derived from 100% annually renewable resources, has named Dennis McGrew president and CEO. McGrew replaces Kathleen Bader, who has retired.

Plastic carton specialist HLP Clear Packaging Products is opening a new office at 75 Maiden Ln. in New York City. The office will be managed by Emily Heimsoth.

Carol Roberts

International Paper, the world’s largest paper and forest products company, has announced several organizational changes. Among them, Carol Roberts has been appointed senior vice president of packaging solutions. In addition, the company announced that its president, Robert M. Amen, has decided to retire.

Dubuit of America, a supplier of screen printing equipment and supplies, has relocated its offices to 70 Monaco Dr., Roselle, IL 60172.

Axilone, a supplier of caps and closures for perfumes and cosmetics, has announced that its German division, Axilone GmbH, has been renamed Axilone Germany.
