RIT Helps Students Network

This fall, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT; Rochester, NY) will host its first-ever Packaging Design Colloquium to allow RIT students to meet with prominent cosmetic manufacturers and packaging suppliers. RIT is a recognized institution for packaging science and engineering.

The event’s details are still being planned, says Jerome Fraillon, manager of technical package development for Coty Inc. He is helping to publicize the event and recruit company participation. Fraillon says discussion topics tentatively include Doing Business with Asia, Design Trends and Effective Branding, UV-Cured Ink Capabilities, Small-Volume Constraints in Package Design, and Supply-Chain Issues in the Cosmetic Industry.

Fraillon invites suppliers and brand-name manufacturers interested in participating to contact him by phone at 212/389-7498 or by e-mail at jerome_fraillon@cotyinc.com. “People are welcome to speak about any subject they’d like to tackle,” he said. Suppliers such as Arkay Packaging Corp. have already confirmed their participation.

Revlon To Launch New Prestige Fragrance

Revlon announced it will launch a new prestige fragrance on July 1. The company has entered into a multiyear agreement with Gemini Cosmetics.

“We’re very pleased to be launching our prestige fragrance business with Gemini Cosmetics. It is one of the most strategic and results-oriented [companies] in the business,” says Jack Stahl, Revlon’s president and CEO. Revlon’s mass-fragrance brands, Jean Nate and Charlie, will continue to be managed in-house.

Industry veterans Neil Katz and Robert Rumsby formed Gemini Cosmetics in 2004. The company’s strength lies in its ability to reinterpret a brand’s image through a fragrance package. A recent accomplishment was the design for the Tommy Bahama fragrances. According to Katz, the key to design is having a true understanding of a brand. “Most brands are about a certain attitude,” he says.
