HBA Health & Beauty America 2005
Thirteen may prove to be a good-luck number for attendees hoping to find new packaging ideas at this year’s HBA Health & Beauty America trade show. The show’s 13th edition will take place at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on September 27–29. More than 600 exhibitors will showcase their latest developments in cosmetic and personal care packaging and more.
The trade show will address a range of topics, from formulation to finished packaging. Packaging will be a main focus, with the industry’s premier exhibitors showcasing their offerings. Show organizers also report an expanded spotlight on lab equipment, as well as well-rounded representation from companies offering private-label, contract manufacturing, ingredient sourcing, and formulating services.
HBA’s two co-located sectors also report new developments. The Personal Care Ingredients & Technology Expo (PCITX )will highlight ingredients and formulation. The Inside Beauty show and conferences are dedicated to nutraceuticals and the wellness industry. In addition, Inside Beauty’s first annual Natural Beauty Awards will debut at this year’s show.
HBA and PCITX will offer more than 50 master classes, lectures, panel discussions, and paper presentations that industry professionals won’t want to miss. Topics will include Cult Branding; Managing the Perils of Buying from the Far East; The New Style Man: What He Wants; Making Point-of-Purchase Displays Work; and the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association’s session on FDA regulatory issues. Also of note, supplier Ampersand Label Inc. and graphics studio Hirschhorn & Young Graphics will host a workshop on labeling and regulatory issues with guest speaker Gary Korba of MG New York.
On September 27, HBA’s annual International Package Design Awards Dinner will highlight the industry’s achievements. Also on September 27 is the show’s opening keynote speech by Susan J. Kropf, Avon’s president and COO.

Stock Line

A pump is specifically designed to meet the aesthetic and functional needs of the prestige perfume industry. The Melodie pump features an extremely low profile and a transparent dip tube, making it look discreet on a fragrance package. In addition, the pump’s inner mechanisms can be hidden within the neck of a fragrance bottle, providing greater flexibility for packaging design. Dual-Ended Nail Polish Package
A nail polish package features two bottles that can house two products, such as a nail polish and a treatment item. The two bottles screw onto a connector that features a brush applicator on each end, forming one convenient package. This package is just one of a supplier’s designs for nail polish packaging. Extended-Text Labels
A supplier’s patented MultiVision line of extended-text labels includes a range of designs. The EasyTab is a multiple-page label that provides up to 11 pages above the base label. The FlexVision label is an extended-text label specifically designed to conform to squeezable plastic tubes. Card-Style Sampler
A laminate card is designed for magazine and mailed promotions, for products such as lipstick, lip gloss, foundation, and fragrance gels. The card features a flat cavity to house product. Up to three cavities can be placed on one card, with each cavity designed to hold up to 0.25 g of product. The card can be printed using techniques such as offset and UV printing and hot stamping. Low-Profile Jars
A supplier specializes in large-diameter, low-profile PETG jars, which are popular for spa and treatment products. Jar diameters include 75, 83, 89, and 100 mm. Single-Use Swab
A premoistened, single-use swab package features a supplier’s patented snap-open technology. The swab can be pretreated with a brand’s liquid, gel, ointment, or cream product. Designed to be convenient to use, sanitary, and mess-free, the Pro-Swab is available in 4- and 5-in. sizes, with fill capacities ranging from 0.25 to 2.5 ml. The swab’s stem can be made from either polypropylene or polystyrene, and the swab tip can be made from rayon, foam, or a custom material. Blisters
Thermoform-fill-seal blisters make convenient unit-dose packages. The VersaPak line is suited for liquid, gel, lotion, cream, and semisolid products. Kimono Bottles
The Kimono bottle is one of a supplier’s newest standard packaging options. Designed with clean, elegant curves, the Kimono bottle is suited for skin care and hair care products. Mascara Package
A supplier provided the entire package for Avon’s new False Lash Effect mascara. The double-ended package features two bottles, one that is clear and houses a Liqui-Gel Fiber Base Coat, and another that is metallic brown and houses a Volumizing Top Coat. The package’s double-ended anodized-silver connector features two different nylon-brush applicators, each of which is designed to ensure proper product application and performance. Tall Bottles
A line of tall, slender PETG bottles is suited for a range of beauty products. The Tower bottles are offered in sizes of 125, 185, 225, and 275 ml, with standard neck finishes of 24-410 and 20-410. Applicator Tips
A range of specialty applicators is available from a supplier. The applicators’ tips are designed to provide two functions. The edge of the applicator is designed to draw a line on the outer contour of the eye, while the applicator’s flat surface is for blending eye shadow. Airless System
A dispenser featuring an airless pouch system was chosen by German pharmaceutical brand Merck for its Exfoliac skin treatment product. The Twinbag Solo system features two separate airless pouches that keep two ingredients separate until the product is dispensed. Designed to ensure product protection and to be simple to fill, the package is available in sizes of 125, 150, and 200 ml, with pouches in fill capacities of 30, 65, 75, and 92 ml. Tubes
Tubes are available in a range of new designs. The Tandem SC40 is a 40-mm plastic monolayer tube with a threaded, removable bicolor flip-top cap. Sizes include 1.4 and 5.4 oz. The SilverLine laminate tube line is designed to capture the look of an aluminum tube and to provide the barrier properties of a laminate tube. Stock Bottles
Four new stock bottles have been added to a company’s line. One is an 8-oz high-density polyethylene soft-touch tapered round bottle, which accommodates Saint-Gobain Calmar’s MD-300 dispenser. A 9-oz tapered PETG bottle is compatible with a range of pumps and sprayers. A 300-ml PVC bottle features Airspray International’s F2 Finger Pump dispenser for foam products. The 350-ml OPET custom oval bottle can be paired with a variety of dispensing closures and pumps. Thick-Walled Jar
A 30-ml thick-walled PETG jar is available from stock. The jar features a 48-mm neck finish, and like the other four jars in the supplier’s stock line, it can be injection molded in various colors. Decoration can be done in-house using silk-screening, hot stamping, metallizing, and frosting. The company will also showcase samples of its new in-house technology for thermally applied graphics that achieve the look and quality of silk-screening. Folding Cartons

Lipstick Applicator
An applicator is designed to let users apply lipstick in a hygienic, convenient manner. The patented ColorKiss applicator features a small-sized card that is pretreated with lipstick. To apply the lipstick, users simply remove a sheet of film that protects the lipstick, fold the card in half, and press the card to their lips, transferring the lipstick.
