Show Coverage

image

From April 1314, SouthPack returns to Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center. The biennial show will feature the newest trends in containers, materials, machinery, and services.

imageCosmetic and personal care packaging professionals will want to check out the latest in bottles, cartons, cans, jars, labels, tubes, and vials; labeling, coding, filling, and decorating technology; and contract packaging services. For a partial list of exhibitors, see the list at right.

SouthPack will also host a number of conferences that beauty packaging professionals won't want to miss. One of the conferences, to be held Wednesday, April 13, is called Creating a Sensational New Brand or Revitalizing an Old One. The "how to" session will be led by Robert Wilkes, a nationally known brand strategist and marketing communications design consultant who specializes in consumer goods packaging. First on Wilkes's agenda is teaching conference attendees how to identify and understand their target customers. Next, he will discuss strategies for marketing a product. This includes finding the right packaging, brand identity and positioning (including a brand's name), and merchandising environment, and determining other issues related to making a sale from the shelf.

Another session happening on April 13 is called RFID: The Basics and Beyond. Three speakers will discuss key topics associated with RFID technology. Bill Delmolino, vice president of technical sales and product manager of print-and-apply/RFID for NJM/CLI Packaging Systems, will present RFID: The Basics. Jeff Richards, president and CEO of R4 Global Solutions, will host a segment called The Role of RFID in Packaging and Labeling. Finally, Ann Marie Phaneuf, director of marketing for Weber Marking Systems, will discuss how to meet the EPC's RFID mandates for case and pallet tagging.

On Thursday, April 14, a conference called Design Tools and Techniques will feature a session called Creative Design and Custom Packaging Development. A second session will focus on how to develop protective packaging for shipping purposes.

SouthPack will also be collocated with two new features. Design & Manufacturing South will focus on broad-based design and manufacturing solutions such as contract manufacturing and the latest in design analysis software. PLASTEC South 2005 targets the plastics processing industry. Focuses will include molding machinery and molding systems, coatings, colorants, resins, and more.

EXHIBITOR PRODUCTS

Applicator Tips

imagePlastic ampules are offered with a range of applicator tips. A standard design is a cylindrical polyolefin applicator tip. More recently added styles include a cylindrical tip with a centered hole fashioned to enhance product flow, and a firmer Hytrel-nylon angled tip for more-precise application. A series of brush applicator tips in a variety of materials and configurations is also available. The ampule is a unit-dose design that eliminates the inconvenience of having to tear or cut the package's top in order to dispense product. Instead, when users squeeze the ampule, its patented internal membrane ruptures. Another squeeze of the tube then dispenses product onto the applicator's tip. James Alexander Corp., Blairstown, NJ.

Label Printer-Applicator

An RFID label printer-applicator is designed to make it easy to print, encode, verify, and apply pressure-sensitive RFID smart labels to cartons and pallets in one operation. According to the company, if a tag is unverifiable, the Model 5200 system will reject the smart label prior to application. The system utilizes thermal/thermal-transfer technology to produce smart labels with text, bar codes, and graphics at 203 dpi. For companies that already utilize the firm's existing Model 5200 label printer-applicator systems, a retrofit kit is available to upgrade existing units into RFID-capable systems. Weber Marking Systems, Arlington Heights, IL.
