Cosmopack, the pavilion dedicated to cosmetic packaging, returns once again with the Cosmoprof trade show, happening April 1–4 in Bologna, Italy.

Exhibitors will showcase packaging, raw materials, technology, and services at Cosmopack, which will be located in Pavilions 19 and 20. Primary components such as bottles, compacts, dispensers, jars, caps, and sample packaging will be on display. Bags and cartons will also be highlighted, as well as accessories such as labels, applicators, and brushes. Decorators and contract packagers will also be present. In addition, exhibitors will show their latest in machinery and raw materials.

Special features of this year's Cosmoprof show include the Accademia del Profumo awards, which honor the year's top fragrances. The awards ceremony will take place at a gala on April 1. Admission is by invitation only. Another event happening on April 1 is a technical and regulatory conference, as well as a session titled A Beginner's Course in Olfactory Understanding. On April 2, a conference will be held called Redefinition of Selective Distribution in Light of the Growing Role of Distributing Chains.

More than 1800 exhibitors are expected at Cosmoprof. Show hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information on Cosmoprof, visit www.cosmoprof.com.

imageContoured Cap

To complement its tubes, a supplier offers its Cebalcap. Designed with rounded curves, the Cebalcap is an oriented flip-top closure. It is available in four diameters. The 2-in.-diameter Cebalcap can be supplied with a flip-top lid in a different color than the rest of the cap. Debossing is also available for the flip-top lid. Shrink bands can be added to the cap for tamper evidence. One of the supplier's most popular tubes is its oval Tandem tube. Alcan Packaging Beauty– Cebal, Norwalk, CT.

imageElegant Bottles

Two new 200-ml bottles have been added to a supplier's line of standard packaging. The 200-ml Delphine treatment bottle (pictured) is designed with a rectangular base and a rounded, tapered neck. It is available in a wide range of materials such as high- and medium-density polyethylene and polypropylene, and in mono-, double-, and triple-layered designs. The 200-ml Dora bottle is streamlined and elegant. Suited for treatment and hair-care products, the Dora bottle is available in high-density polyethylene, in mono-, double-, and triple-layers. Numerous decorating techniques, caps, and pumps are offered for both the Delphine and Dora bottles. DieterBakic International, Munich, Germany.

imagePackage Variety

A supplier produces custom and stock packaging for cosmetics. More than 150 glass molds are available. Other items include injection- and compression-molded caps, compacts, lip product pots, lipstick containers, and jars. Decorating capabilities include silk-screening, hot stamping, frosting, lacquering, metallizing, and soft-touch finishing. The company's in-house design studio aids in custom design using CAD/CAM technology. Arrowpak Inc., a member of Baralan International S.p.A., Richmond Hill, NY.
Booth #P20, B/17–C/12

imageFoam Dispenser

A supplier's instant-foam dispensing pump was chosen for Procter & Gamble's Pampers Kandoo line of child-friendly hand soaps. The pump is the supplier's WRT4 WaterGuard foam pump, which is designed specifically for applications in wet environments such as the bathroom. Procter & Gamble also chose the supplier's foam pump technology for its Pantene Pro-V hair treatment product and its Noxzema Continuous Clean Deep Foaming Cleanser. Airspray International BV, Pompano Beach, FL.
Booth #P19, B/49–C/50

imageVintage Charm

The Inkwell Pot was inspired by vintage inkwells and was designed to combine luxury and whimsy. The pot features a slim-handled brush applicator that makes the package ideal for lip stain products. The package is available in two sizes: a large size for liquid products and a smaller size for powders. The pot's base is molded from PCTA, while the pot's shoulder and brush handle are molded from ABS/SAN. A wide variety of finishing options are available for this stock component. HCT Packaging Inc., Bridgewater, NJ.

imageEasy-to-Assemble Pump

A screw-on lotion-pump assembly was supplied to Yves Rocher for its Spa Energie Vegetale product. The supplier's LX pump is fitted with a Soprano actuator in a translucent matte red. The pump, collar, and overcap are all delivered to the customer as a single unit for ease of assembly. The pump is dependable and contains no elastomer components. The actuator rotates through a 90° turn. The pump assembly's design permits specific positioning of the actuator in the open and closed positions. This feature aligns the decoration on the bottle with the actuator. The pump operates gently and precisely and manages large dosages without precompression. Rexam Dispensing Systems, Purchase, NY.

imageFragrance Bottle

A supplier produced the Prada Fragrance bottle, which features an off-centered neck. One challenge was to mold the bottle's straight lines while keeping the distribution of the glass correct. An artisan's engraved metal plaque, produced by Metapack, was UV-glued onto the shoulder of the bottle in a challenging application. Saint-Gobain Desjonquères, New York, NY.
Booth #P19, C/21–D/22

imageFocusing on Dispensers

A supplier of dispensers and sprayers has established a new North American division specially focused on packaging for the prestige cosmetics and fragrance markets. One of the company's newest developments is Pure Path Technology, a dispensing system for lotions and gels. It is available in the supplier's Aria and Sonnet dispenser models. The pump is easy to prime, even with extremely viscous product formulas. It is fashioned so that no metal parts come into contact with a product as it is dispensed, to ensure product integrity. The supplier has also introduced Melodie, an ultralow-profile fine-mist spray pump for fragrances. It is designed so that the tank isn't visible from the outside of a fragrance bottle or package. Saint-Gobain Calmar, North American Division, New York, NY.

imageSuper-Low-Profile Pumps

To accommodate and provide greater flexibility for package design, a supplier offers two new super-low-profile pumps. The Inspiration pump is a crimp design. It is available in a height of 10.8 mm with a 70-µl spray dose, or in a height of 12.4 mm and with a 100-µl spray dose. The Progress pump is crimpless. It is available in a height of 11.6 mm for a 70-µl dose, or in a 13 mm height for a 100-µl dose. Both pumps are designed so that no metal parts come into contact with a product to avoid compatibility issues. The metal spring is located outside the product's path, and a plate valve replaces the metal ball. To further the pumps' discrete design, they come with a clear dip-tube. The Progress pump can be delivered as one unit. Pfeiffer (Ing. Erich Pfeiffer GmbH), Radolfzell, Germany.
Booth #P19, C/58

imageDouble-Ended Airless System

Two semicylindrical airless pouches are placed side by side in one bottle to permit simultaneous dispensing of two products from either end of the bottle. The exchange of air necessary between the pump and bottle is managed by the pump itself. The Twinbag Verso does not require a hole at the bottom of the bottle as is needed for most similar systems; the user can dispense product from either end, and the bottle can sit upright on the cap of either pump. The bottle is well suited to such dual-product concepts as "lotion and cream" or "day and night." It is possible for the pumps on the opposite ends of the bottle to be different; for example, one might be a spray pump and the other, a high-viscosity cream pump. Lablabo, Annemasse Cedex, France.
Booth #P19, D/15–E/16

imageLow-Profile Design

A low-profile fragrance pump has a stacking height of 11 mm. In addition to its low profile, the Elegance pump offers a number of other benefits. It is designed to be easy to actuate and the pump's precompression feature ensures a consistent, fine-mist spray. To enhance product compatibility, the pump's metal springs are kept out of contact of the product. Elegance is available in two doses, 70 and 100 µl, and in 13- and 15-mm ferules, both FEA and GPI. Emsar S.p.A., Stratford, CT.
