Show Coverage: Pack Expo International
For the latest in containers, materials, machinery, and technologies, packaging professionals won't want to miss Pack Expo International. On November 7–11, the biennial trade show returns to Chicago's McCormick Place. More than 1600 companies are expected to exhibit in the show's more than 1.2 million sq ft of floor space.
Packaging
professionals should take note of the features new to this year's
show. Among them, a Showcase of Packaging Innovations will highlight
the winning packages of competitions held by fourteen organizations
in the past year. The organizations include DuPont, ExxonMobil Chemical
Co., the Flexible Packaging Association, the Glass Packaging Institute,
the Institute of Packaging Professionals, the National Association
of Container Distributors, the New Jersey Packaging Executives Club,
the Paperboard Packaging Council, and The Tube Council. Many beauty
packages will be among the award winners displayed.
Several new pavilions have been added to the show. Among them is the new Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) Pavilion. This pavilion will focus on suppliers' solutions for the RFID requirements of brands' supply chains.
In addition, Pack Expo has added a Packaging Security Resource Center. The center will focus on what steps brands can take to protect their packages from threats of bioterrorism, counterfeiting, and product adulteration. Exhibits and technologies will be displayed that can help companies meet this goal.
Finally, Pack Expo will host several conferences. RFID technologies will be the key topic of at least two sessions. On Tuesday, November 9, there will be a session titled RFID Packaging Implementation: Facts, Fantasies, Challenges, and Opportunities. On Wednesday, November 10, another RFID session will be held called The Department of Defense Adds RFID to Its Warfighter Support Arsenal. Advance registration is available for the conferences.
Approximately 50,000 visitors are expected to attend Pack Expo International. For more information on the show, visit www.packexpo.com or contact The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute by phone at 703/243-8555, by fax at 703/243-3038, or by e-mail at expo@pmmi.org.
EXHIBITOR PRODUCTS
Synthetic Papers
Smooth, ultrawhite synthetic papers offer good print quality, a uniform coating surface, predictable convertibility, and brand appeal. The papers are 100% waterproof and recyclable. They are also resistant to chemicals, grease, and scratching. Enhanced production speeds and clean cutting and stacking into various label forms can be achieved. These label forms include pressure-sensitive labels, direct thermal and thermal-transfer labels, and in-mold labels. The ISE105 in-mold label provides improved antistatic properties and a wider blow-molding temperature range, and IUE105 combines those features with an ultrasmooth surface. Yupo Corp. America, Chesapeake, VA.

Contoured
Packaging
Cosmetic packages can be produced in almost any size or shape and with good seal integrity. The crisp, durable packaging is shaped to the product and solidifies brand messaging while reducing the potential for tampering or pilfering. Makeup products that can be packaged this way include lipstick, compacts, eyeliners, eye pencils, blushes, and mascara. The packaging is created with roll-fed plastic for the blister; and sheet-fed film, card, or plastic for the backing. The packages will not fade or discolor like some printed cardboard packages do. Quick changeover enables several products to be designed on one machine with optional in-line printing and labeling. Easy-open features can be added. Multivac Inc., Kansas City, MO.

Stretch Wrappers
A supplier of stretch wrapping systems has introduced three new machines. The RA Rotary Automatic series of machines is designed to process 40 to 120 loads per hour. Features include a more stable, smaller-footprint frame design, automatic guard gates that protect the wrap zone from intrusion, and a new carriage guidance system. The Vectra semiautomatic stretch wrapper features all-steel construction and an all-enclosed design. It is cost-effective for small companies. The SpectraMax is an automatic stretch wrapper. Its automatic film-tail treatment cuts film, and a wiper attaches the film securely across the load. This eliminates the need for the forklift operator to do this manually, cutting another labor step out of the packaging process. Orion Packaging Systems, Collierville, TN.

RFID
Label Printer/Encoder
An RFID smart label printer/ encoder is designed to help brands comply with emerging RFID supply-chain requirements set by retailers and government agencies. The R4Mplus system combines smart label encoding and verification with thermal/thermal-transfer printing. It prints text, bar codes, and graphics on labels at a resolution of 203 dpi. The system encodes information on very thin, ultra-high-frequency transponders embedded in smart labels, and simultaneously verifies that the encoding is correct.
