Show Coverage: Luxe Pack Monaco
Luxe Pack, a trade show dedicated to packaging for luxury products—especially beauty products—returns to the Grimaldi Forum on October 20–23 in the Principality of Monaco. At the 17th edition of the show, more than 300 exhibitors are expected to present their offerings. Many of them are prominent cosmetic and personal care packaging suppliers.
Exhibitors
will showcase their latest in primary components and secondary
packaging. Components supplied by these companies include
bags, bottles, caps, cartons, compacts, dispensers, jars,
paper, pumps, ribbons, raw materials, sample packaging, tubes,
textiles, and accessories. To find out which companies will
be exhibitors at the show, see the partial list below.
Several special events are scheduled to take place during the show. On Thursday, October 21, designer Marc Rosen will moderate a seminar titled Dispensing Luxury...The Packaging Dose. The session will explore how luxury packaging plays a role in successful new product launches. A panel of industry experts will take part in the seminar, including Veronique Gabai, senior vice president and general manager for the designer fragrances division of The Estée Lauder Companies; Jill Hill, managing director and proprieter of Aspects Beauty Co.; and Daniel Rachmanis, president of Fine Fragrances for Americas Firmenich.
On Friday, October 22, the grand-prize winner of the Monaco Luxe Pack Design Award will be announced. The competition invited entrants to design a concept for a powder compact with a mirror and an applicator, plus a matching lipstick container. The eight participating countries are Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, the UK, and the United States. The grand-prize winner will be presented with a trophy and a monetary award.
Visitor attendance at the 2003 Luxe Pack Monaco show increased 11.5% from the 2002 show, from 4770 to 5307 attendees. Actuators
A range of actuators for fragrance pumps features colored or designed tops in metal sheaths. Impression actuators can help a package look brighter and more interesting, and they can lend an upscale appearance. Transparent, jewel-like colors are available, as are opaque colors. Both come in domed or flat shapes. A logo or design can be included for reinforcing the brand. The company also offers a very small super-low-profile fragrance pump, which provides added flexibility in package design. Emsar Group, Stratford, CT.

Fragrance
Packaging
A package for Parlux's Ocean Pacific fragrance consists of a glass bottle housed within a clear PCTA copolyester plastic shell. The space between the bottle and plastic case is partially filled with a specially developed fluid meant to simulate the movement of a Pacific Ocean wave when the package is tipped upside-down. The company's own ColorPour sealant is used to seal the space between the outer clear PCTA tube and inner glass bottle. The package's overcap is made of clear Surlyn; its decorative collar is aluminum anodized in matte silver with the Ocean Pacific name silk-screened onto its circumference. CROWN Risdon USA Inc., Watertown, CT.

Paperboard
Box
A hybrid package lends the prestige look and feel of rigid-set boxes at a reduced cost. The Evolution Box features a printed, finished solid-bleached-sulfate paperboard blank in place of the lightweight paper wrap used in a typical rigid-set box construction. The blank is then joined to a scored chipboard stiffener using the company's proprietary technology, and the resulting tray is glued on all four sides to create a durable carton structure. By using a paperboard blank as the facing stock, the box provides such aesthetic properties as a smooth printing surface for high-quality graphic reproduction and support for demanding finishing techniques. AGI/Klearfold, New York, NY.

Tube
Closures
A tube supplier also specializes in producing a wide range of dispensing closures. Styles include the oval-shaped Tandem closure and the bicolored Cebalcap. Bicolored versions give packaging extra visual impact. The snap-on, oriented, biinjection-molded closures are designed especially for ease of use. Decoration can be added to the caps using techniques such as hot stamping. In addition, a protective shrink wrap can be added to make caps tamper evident. Alcan Packaging Cebal, Norwalk, CT.

Glass
Alternative
A glasslike material offers an alternative to glass for high-clarity, thick-walled containers. Glass Polymer looks and feels like glass and offers additional design properties. With injection molding or blow molding, the material can produce strong, elegant-looking containers. The company also manufactures Embrace copolyester, a resin offering increased design freedom for packages because of its ability to produce attractive graphics and a label that can fit high-contour containers. Eastman Specialty Plastics, Kingsport, TN.

Offerings
in Resins
A supplier offers a range of proprietary resins that can be used for cosmetic packaging. The firm's thick-walled DuPont Surlyn simulates the appearance of glass, and offers improved dimensional stability and tolerance. Several of the company's materials are specially designed to accommodate a range of decorating techniques. DuPont Delrin is well suited for collars for fragrance bottles. It can be plated using the firm's patented technology. DuPont Shine-E Rynite combines high-gloss with improved thermal properties. DuPont Crastin can be powder-coated to create a wide range of surface effects and textures. DuPont Cosmetic Solutions, Wilmington, DE.
