Getting Intimate

By Jennifer Kwok, Managing Editor

SweetSpot Labs is not your typical personal care line. Its products—a wash, on-the-go wipettes, and a fragrance—are designed specifically for feminine hygiene. SweetSpot's founder, Shari Creed, started creating the line when she realized that no personal care products on the market were tailored specifically for a woman's vaginal area.

"There were so many products for other parts of a woman's body—our hair, our faces—but nothing for that area," says Creed. "I was also concerned that there was little differentiation in body wash products for men and women, yet their anatomies are so different. It seemed to me that a part of the body that is so related to a woman's health and well-being deserved specially formulated products, rather than being 'one size fits all'."

Creed speaks from experience. For years, she sought medical attention for low-grade cystitis, among other things. She searched for alternative personal care products. Finding none suitable, she decided to develop her own. SweetSpot Labs products are pH friendly and are scented with essential oils like pink grapefruit, tangerine peel, and basil. These ingredients are known for their detoxifying and balancing properties, says Creed. Unscented versions are also available.

Creed, who owns a branding company that has done a lot of work for cosmetic companies, knew what she wanted for the packaging. "Women have told me that they've taken other feminine hygiene products and transferred them to other containers, because they didn't want people to see the packaging and think they had a problem," she says. "I wanted to make sure that our packages looked pretty and that they weren't embarrassing for women to display in their bathrooms."

Functional packaging was a requirement. For the bottle for the Gentle Wash, Creed says that she chose a stock plastic bottle that was easy to squeeze and easy to travel with. The On-The-Go Wipettes are contained in a plastic tissue-style package with a convenient resealable flap. Finally, the individual cotton pads for the Eau De Spot fragrance are housed in convenient purse-sized high-density polyethylene jars that were custom created overseas.

Creed says that some adjustments, such as finding the right adhesive for the labels, were challenging. However, the effort has paid off, and it can even be said that she's created a new category in the personal care market that can be described by a phrase she's trademarked—Intimate Grooming.
