Show Coverage

Luxe Pack New York

img On June 8–9, Luxe Pack New York returns to New York City at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 W. 18th St.). Scheduled to run in conjunction with The Fragrance Foundation's FiFi week, the second annual show will again host prominent cosmetic and personal care packaging suppliers.

The show's exhibitors represent the comprehensive scope of the beauty packaging industry. Components supplied by these companies include bottles, caps, cartons, compacts, pumps, sample packaging, paper, ribbons, raw materials, textiles, and accessories.

At the show on June 8, package designer Marc Rosen will moderate a seminar called Neo-Luxury Packaging...the Emotional Connection. Seminar panelists will include Alison Farn, president, Gary Farn Ltd.; Roger Caracappa, senior vice president, global packaging, The Estée Lauder Companies; and Theo Spilka, vice president, new business development, for Firmenich.

For the first time, the U.S. winner of the Monaco Luxe Pack Design Award will be announced at the show, at an invitation-only cocktail party scheduled for June 9 at 1:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Pavilion. The competition recognizes outstanding junior-level designers who have at least one, and no more than five, years of experience working as freelance or full-time designers. Candidates were required to submit a design concept based on the competition's theme, "Modernity in Monaco." Finalists will be chosen in eight countries. The grand- prize winner will be announced at the Luxe Pack Monaco trade show, happening October 20-23.

Another special feature of Luxe Pack NewYork is its FiFi Awards nominees' showcase, which will display all of the 2004 FiFi-nominated packages.

In 2003, Luxe Pack New York saw 788 visitors and almost 40 exhibitors. Attendees came from companies such as Aveda, Avon, Bath & Body Works, Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Chanel, Christian Dior, Colgate-Palmolive, Elizabeth Arden, Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, LVMH, Procter & Gamble, Revlon, Shiseido, and Unilever Cosmetics.

EXHIBITOR PRODUCTS

Stackable Dispenser

img A dispenser suited for semiliquid, liquid, and gel products can be marketed individually or be stacked to form a palette. A user must press on the dispenser's piston to dispense product through holes located on the container's top. The two-part dispenser makes assembling easy. Once product is poured into the ABS base, the polyethylene piston can then be snapped on to the base. Alcan Packaging Techpack, New York, NY.

Luxury Cartons

img A supplier specializes in high-end custom cartons. Its clients have included Chanel, Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Procter & Gamble, and Mary Kay. Popular carton styles include reverse-tuck, straight-tuck, autoglued-bottom, purse, and tent styles. Special features can be sleeves, trays, and die-cut windows. For decoration, the company offers offset UV lithographic, process, flexographic, gravure, and screen printing. Other effects include coatings (pearlescent, textured, spot, high-gloss UV, waterbased, matte, and semitone), varnishes, and lamination. Arkay Packaging, Hauppauge, NY.

Booth #11

Sandblasted Decor

img A glass packaging supplier fashioned an elegant bottle for the Cerruti Si men's fragrance. Created in sizes of 40 and 90 ml, the bottle was a technical challenge to produce due to its off-center neck and heavy glass distribution. Another feat was adding the bottle's sandblasted verticle band, which also decorates the bottle's neck. According to the supplier, printing the Cerruti logo on the sandblasted band while printing the Si logo just outside of the band required extremely precise registration. Bormioli Rocco USA, New York, NY.

Booth #35

Fragrance Bottles

img A glass bottle company offers its newest line of stock fragrance bottles. The Nomad line features bottles in sizes of 30, 50, and 100 ml. The bottles can be provided with spray-through caps. The bottles and caps can be decorated in custom colors. Saint-Gobain Desjonquères, New York, NY.

Booth #7

Aluminum Caps

img High-end aluminum caps can be designed for a modern, upscale look. Collars can be produced in custom colors and in square and tiered shapes. Collars can also feature a heavy base, or can be fashioned to extend over the bottle's shoulders. The company also specializes in extruded aluminum and injection-molded plastic components, such as caps, closures, and compacts. It offers more than 400 aluminum caps and collars in stock. Axilone USA, New York, NY.

Booth #31

Collars

img A firm produced the collars for Ellen Tracy's Imagine fragrance bottles. Adorning the 30-, 50-, and 75-ml bottles, the collars were designed without visible parting lines. They were injected and then electroplated, resulting in a glossy, white, bronzed coating. Lisi Cosmetics, Paris, France.

Booth #45

Decorative Textiles

img Decorative textiles can be applied to cosmetic and personal care packages, such as boxes and bags. Material types include natural linen, leather-like textile, and rich rayon. Cloths are offered in a variety of colors, ranging from pastel pink to brown. Custom color matching is also an option. Decoration can be added to cloth using foil/pigment stamping, embossing, and screen and offset printing. ICG/Holliston, Kingsport, TN.

Booth #47

Natural Paperboard

img A supplier's Kraftpak folding carton board created a natural yet upscale look for the Gucci Eau de Parfum fragrance cartons. The low-density, unbleached, and uncoated virgin fiber paperboard has a clean, natural look that can enhance diverse brand images. Other benefits include excellent scoring and folding characteristics and the ability to be run on high-speed filling lines. MeadWestvaco Corp., Stamford, CT.

Booth #22

Value-Added Packaging

img A company specializes in converting secondary packaging from paper, plastic, or combinations of both. Plastic folding cartons, premium-quality paperboard folding cartons, rigid set boxes, and litho-laminated fluted packaging are among the package styles offered. The company has three U.S. structural design centers to support marketers' creative packaging needs. In 2003, the company extended its brand to Europe under the name AGI/Klearfold Europe. AGI/Klearfold, New York, NY.

Booth #4

Three-Dimensional Effect

img A box created for a Lolita Lempicka holiday gift set features 3-D decoration inspired by the theme of a winter wonderland. To give the impression of glittering snow and frosted crystals, the white paper box has a textured finish and was silk-screened with gold sparkles. The edges of the carton surrounding the clear window were cut at sharp angles to resemble pointy icicles. For added effect, a second layer of spiky paper lies beneath the transparent window. A transparent two-piece thermoformed tray holds the products in place in the carton and also simulates the experience of looking through a glass window. Alliora USA, New York, NY.

Booth #31

Fragrance Container

img When Emporio Armani wanted to market two fragrance bottles in one package, a polystyrene container was the ideal solution. The polystyrene container was injection molded and lacquered inside and out with a silver coating. The container's lid was injection molded from clear polystyrene. Graphics were hot stamped in silver on the lid and in black on the container. A challenging feat was printing the Armani logo on the recessed portion of the container. Other marketing information was silk-screened on the container's bottom. Dapy Paris, New York, NY.
