EastPack 2004

The stage is again set for EastPack, the East Coast's premiere trade show for the cosmetic and personal care packaging industry. Taking place June 15–17 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, the event will host high-profile beauty packaging suppliers in its Cosmetic and Personal Care Packaging Pavilion.

In the Cosmetic and Personal Care Packaging Pavilion, sponsored by CPC Packaging, trade show attendees can source the latest offerings in bottles, bags, cartons, jars, tubes, compacts, labels, closures, dispensers, and accessories. Exhibiting companies will also feature machinery and services for decorating, finishing, coloring, and coating.

Beauty professionals won't want to miss CPC Packaging's 2004 Editors' Choice Awards showcase. Located at the CPC Packaging booth (#4322), displays will highlight the 20 award winners, which are covered in-depth in our Editor's Choice Awards section.

EastPack will be colocated with four other trade shows: Atlantic Design & Manufacturing, Ingredients Expo, Medical Design & Manufacturing East, and PLASTEC. Three jars in sizes of 15, 40, and 50 ml were run on the machine. The labels were extremely small, measuring 3.5 and 5.5 mm in width and 106, 121, and 129 mm in length. Logotech Inc., Fairfield, NJ.

imgShatter-Safe Bottle

A glass bottle is coated with plastic, which helps to contain glass shards if the bottle breaks and shatters. Highly resistant to strong acids, alkalis, and most solvents, the coating keeps products like fragrance and essential oil from spilling if the bottle breaks. The coating also makes the bottle less slippery to hold. The Pour-Out SAFE bottle is available in seven sizes ranging from 15 to 1200 cm3, with a 28-430 neck finish. O. Berk Co., Union, NJ. Cosmeceutical Closure

The closure's two pieces, which are molded separately and snapped together, can be supplied in different colors. The closure's flush-set hinge is designed to prevent breakage during production. Its durability withstands the wear and tear of repeated opening and closing. Liners can also be added. The supplier is currently developing this closure and offers prototype samples. imgEarth-Friendly Container

An earth-friendly secondary container for Aveda's Uruku lipstick is an innovative look for a cosmetic package. Instead of a conventional carton, the Uruku secondary container is a clamshell molded from 100% recycled newspaper pulp. The clamshell was molded in a newspaper-and-water mixture and dried with technology used by the egg crate industry. To hold the clamshell closed, Aveda added a 100% PCR paperboard sleeve that was printed with soy ink from Johnson Printing. UFP Technologies, Georgetown, MA.

Smart Plastic

imgPolypropylene, PET, and PVC cartons are offered with many beneficial features. One carton model, called SmartKrease, has easy-to-crease corners. The sharp corners help maintain flat carton walls, overcoming the plastic's shape memory. Production can be run on automated erecting lines. To reduce transport costs, the cartons are shipped flat. For visual impact, cartons can be offset printed with photographic-like images. Other options include silk-screening, embossing, and hot stamping. HLP Clear Packaging Products USA Inc., Torrance, CA.

imgTwo-Sided Printing

Resealable labels can be printed on both sides to accommodate additional text. P2S, or Printed 2 Side, labels feature a base constructed from a 2.6-mil white synthetic pressure-sensitive material. As part of the firm's proprietary converting process, a custom-developed treatment is applied to the label's adhesive side to lock in ink so that no ink transfers onto the container. Graphics are printed on both sides of the label using high-definition flexographic printing, which utilizes digital plates to create graphics. Prestige Label Company, Inc., Brooklyn, NY.

Booth #4456

Clear Packaging

imgAs a secondary container, clear packaging can showcase products on the shelf. Packages can be decorated using multicolor offset lithography, silk-screening, hot- and cold-leaf stamping, and embossing. Custom package styles can be created, such as tote bags, curved shapes, pillow packs, and packages with hangtags. Production benefits include soft-folding creases for easy carton setup and excellent performance on automatic cartoning equipment. Clearpak Inc., Stoney Creek, ON, Canada.
