Comfort In a Can

Customers will want to hold on to CCL Container's (Hermitage, PA) aerosol cans. The supplier's ergonomic designs have been popular for recently launched hair-care products for Joico and Pureology.

oico, a division of Zotos International, recently launched two of its K-Pak Styling products in CCL Container's Comfort Hold can. The Protective Hair Spray and Thermal Designing Foam are both housed in the Comfort Hold, whose curved neck is designed to be ergonomic. The hairspray is packaged in a 10-oz version of the can, while the foam is sold in an 8.8-oz size. For added comfort, the cans were finished with a velvety, suede-like varnish. The varnish was applied during the final stage of production, in a white pearlescent color to match the rest of the K-Pak line.

"Color matching is often difficult, particularly with neutral colors like cream and white," says Ernie Koneck, marketing manager for Joico. "There are so many gradations of color that it takes a fine balance to get it right. We also have a gold logo, which is another hard color to match. Despite the potential difficulties, CCL was great."

imgHair-care company Pureology chose CCL Container's Extended-Neck Trimline can for its InChargePlus Finishing Spray. Like the Comfort Hold, the Trimline has a tapered, ergonomic neck. "The cans we offer are produced with neck shapes to make them comfortable to use," says Ed Martin, vice president of sales and marketing for CCL Container. The tapered neck is also meant to be aesthetically pleasing. "The designs for many of our personal care aerosol bottles are driven by the bullet-shaped look of plastic bottles. This is for customers who want their aerosol cans to match the look of their bottles."

The can's mustard-colored, matte-satiny finish is eye-catching. "We felt that mustard is an upscale, designer color," says Jim Markham, Pureology's CEO and founder. "Also, the color is equally appealing to men and women."

To achieve the yellow color, the metal can was first printed with a white basecoat. Then the custom yellow shade was dry offset printed over it. Finally, a matte overvarnish was added.

The can's graphics were printed in the firm's signature purple color. The purple custom-colored dispenser is by SeaquistPerfect Dispensing (Cary, IL).

Natural Appeal

imgPackaging with natural appeal is the hallmark of Kiss My Face (Gardiner, NY). The brand's new Big Kiss bath bars, launched in January, are no different.

Rather than using a standard secondary carton, the 85%-organic soap bars are wrapped in wax paper. The wax paper concept was developed by Steve Byckiewicz, vice president of Kiss My Face and New York- based design firm

Alternatives Design. According to Kiss My Face, wax paper was ideal because customers can smell the product's scent through it.

In addition to its outer packaging, the 10-oz bar's large size is sure to get customers' attention. As the package's label states, the bar is "big and beautiful--but don't drop it on your toes!"

Hot Packaging

imgUrban Decay's new Hot Box Mini Makeup Compact is smokin'! Designed for the hipster who demands more than the conventional compact, the Hot Box package simulates a Zippo lighter. Supplied by HCT Packaging Inc. (Bridgewater, NJ), the compact contains tubes for mascara and concealer, eye shadow, lip color, and a mirror. Its 1 1/2-in. height makes it pocket- sized.

"We feel this progressive, radical product is at the leading edge of cosmetic design," says Tim Thorpe of HCT Packaging.

Made for Men

Football lovers take note: Boom! Creative Development, the exclusive licensee of the National Football League personal care brand, has introduced the NFL's first men's grooming kit. The travel kit includes shaving foam in a can supplied by CCL Container.

imgThe brushed-aluminum can is silver, to match the line's silver color theme. It measures 45 X 97 mm for travel convenience. The kit is housed in leather bags that sport the NFL team logo specific to the region in which it is sold.

"We introduced the products at the beginning of the football season to capitalize on fan interest," says Marc DeGaetano, manager for Boom! "Once we start to market merchandise individually, expand our distribution, and add products to the line, we expect them to be year-round performers."

Also recently launched for men is Nautica's Competition eau de toilette spray. The bright-yellow cans printed with the fragrance's logo were produced in sizes of 75 and 100 ml. Adorning the bottles are matte-black low-profile pumps supplied by Rexam Dispensing Systems (Purchase, NY). The preassembled pumps are part of Rexam's The Crimpless System line.
