Rochelle Bloom New President Takes the Reins at The Fragrance Foundation
By Michelle Nahum-AlbrightOn January 6, Rochelle Bloom succeeded Annette Green as president of The Fragrance Foundation (New York City). Bloom brings with her 26 years of both domestic and global experience within the Estée Lauder family of companies, handling retail and advertising, and brand and general management.
Bloom started her career at Lauder as the first brand manager for Estée Lauder in Canada, rising through the corporation to run the billion-dollar Estée Lauder International division. She has worked on the Clinique and Estée Lauder brands, and recently served as president of Bobbi Brown Professional Cosmetics. She has also been intimately involved in the launches of classic fragrance favorites like White Linen, Beautiful, and Pleasures, as well as niche brands such as Prescriptives-Calyx.
With insight developed through such experiences, Bloom links creativity and consumer confidence. "The fragrance industry needs to reinvent itself and rebuild confidence and enthusiasm for the category with our ultimate customer--the consumer. It is everyone's responsibility to contribute to the new dawn of fragrance by using every ounce of the creativity for which this industry is so famous."
Valuing the creativity typical of the fragrance industry, Bloom will encourage it in every aspect of the business during her stay as president. Part of that creativity depends upon packaging, because packaging and brand image serve key roles in developing a visual brand signature. Package designers are challenged to create a visual object in balance with the creative, the practical, and the relevant. Suppliers and manufacturers are charged with the functional manifestation of this vision.
Bloom says that the role The Fragrance Foundation plays in the industry involves communication, motivation, stimulation, education, and partnership. "It is a forum to bring suppliers, manufacturers, designers, and the media together to continue to build global understanding and awareness of fragrance." She envisions added possibilities in expanding interaction among industry members to energize and excite the fragrance consumer.
Bloom also believes that clear and concise communication with consumers has become even more important, as the telephone, the television, and the Internet constantly barrage the consumer with information. Her direct experience with domestic and international markets will strongly support development of programs and events for a world family of affiliated Fragrance Foundations.
Bloom's diverse, global background, broad industry view, strong people skills, and dedication to the mystery, luxury, and fun of the fragrance business will be instrumental in the evolution of her envisioned industry partnership to meet the challenges of the future in fragrance.
Editors' Choice Awards Program Kicks Off
CPC Packaging is pleased to announce its second annual Editors' Choice Awards. Continuing the celebrated program begun last year, CPC's editors are now reviewing all fragrance, cosmetic, and personal care products that debuted on U.S. shelves in 2002. Winners last year included products from Estée Lauder, Revlon, L'Oréal, Avon, Stila, Davies Gate, and others chosen for excellence in packaging design. This year, CPC editors will recognize 16 winners in four categories: Cosmetics, Limited Fragrance, Mass Fragrance, and Personal Care.
For this year's program, CPC is proud to welcome CIBS as a cosponsor. Paul Bergmann, CIBS's chairperson of public relations and awards, and director of packaging engineering for Estée Lauder, is the CIBS spokesperson for the sponsorship. "Excellence in packaging should be celebrated," he says. "Last year, CPC Packaging began a tradition of recognizing both designer and supplier contributions to package design. CIBS, which has been bringing buyers and suppliers together for 56 years, has been a strong supporter of excellence in packaging through annual scholarships to outstanding packaging students. CIBS is therefore delighted to take part in CPC's celebration of the best packages of 2002."
CPC's May/June 2003 issue will feature in-depth stories on each of the winning packages. Leading designers will share their own impressions of the editors' selections during a roundtable discussion that will be excerpted in the issue.
The winners will be on display at EastPack 2003, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, June 24, and awards will be presented to the winning companies at CIBS's June 11 luncheon at Shelly's in New York City. For more information about EastPack, visit www.canontradeshows.com. And for more information about CIBS, visit www.cibsonline.com.
