2002 FiFi Awards Name Four Fragrances Packaging of the Year - Green to Retire from The Fragrance Foundation

Annette Green will retire her presidency of The Fragrance Foundation (New York City) on January 1, 2003, after 41 years of service to the foundation. In conjunction with her retirement, Green has received numerous awards, honoring her achievements in the fragrance industry.

In November, The Fragrance Foundation's board of directors named Green as the foundation's president emeritus. Green will act as the foundation's consultant until 2005 and will continue her roles as president of the board of trustees for the Annette Green Museum and chairman and CEO for the Sense of Smell Institute.

In September, The Fragrance Foundation forwent its customary election procedure for its annual Circle of Champions award, instead unanimously electing Green as the award program's third annual honoree. Each year, the award recognizes a worldwide company or individual who has had a notable impact on the fragrance industry during the previous 10 months.

In addition, Green was bestowed the Décoration de la Ville de Paris honor from the Mayor of Paris on October 16. The decoration recognized Green's establishment of The Fragrance Foundation Francoise, which oversees the French division of the annual FiFi Awards.

In an effort to encourage young talent, the Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors (ICMAD) recognized three design-school students during its 2002 Young Designers Competition. Honored at a dinner in New York City on October 15, 2002, were Tammy Teehan, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (New York City), who took first place and a cash prize of $2500 for Blue Goo Styling Gel; Jessica Weber, a student at Columbus College of Art (Columbus, OH), who won second place and $1500 for Soothe Relaxation Package; and James Vondra, a student at the American Academy of Art (Chicago), who placed third and received $1000 for UVShield Sunblock.

A number of members and competition sponsors attended the dinner, including sponsor CPC Packaging's group editor Daphne Allen.

Green's industry contributions include helping to found the Sense of Smell Institute, establishing the annual FiFi Awards, coining the term "aroma-chology," founding the Certified Sales Specialist program, initiating the Fashion Institute of Technology's cosmetic and fragrance bachelor's and master's degree programs, and coauthoring Secrets of Aromatic Jewelry.

Green started working with the foundation in 1961 when her public relations agency, Annette Green Associates, became its pro bono representative.

When asked about her decision to retire, Green said, "After 41 years with The Fragrance Foundation, I felt it was time for a transition. I want to devote myself to the museum and will still be involved as a consultant to help my successor." Green adds that she also plans to write and lecture.

As Green leaves her official role of The Fragrance Foundation president, she stated her view of fragrance packaging today. "Packaging has become more diverse over the years. Now there are whole lines of fragrance products. The challenge for today's packaging designers is to maintain an exciting image for all of a line's products, not just for the fragrance's package. Plus, the mixture of packaging materials today is much more interesting."

Designers, Packages, Recognized at HBA

Teamwork was the unspoken theme for HBA's Third Annual International Package Design Awards (IPDA) dinner, held October 14, 2002, in New York City during HBA Global Expo. Not only were several packaging professionals recognized for the roles they play on packaging design teams, but a few of the IPDA winners owed part of their success to other members of their crews.

For instance, the evening began with the presentation of a new award, the New Product R&D Technical Team award. The following members of Procter & Gamble Cosmetics' R&D team were honored: Lee Ellen Drechsler, section manager, R&D; Tom Rabe, principal scientist; and Ed Smith, research fellow. One of the team's accomplishments is its work with Permatone, a semipermanent lipstick ingredient used in Max Factor's Lipfinity.

Two packaging professionals were also honored for their contributions to the industry. Neil Scancarella, executive vice president, R&D, for Revlon Inc., was given the Lifetime Achievement in Product Development Award. Involved in the industry for more than 30 years, Scancarella is credited with helping to advance the next generation of color-stay products. "A true reward of a career spent developing cosmetics is found in the enjoyment of working with skilled and committed companies, teams, and individuals," he says.

Roger Caracappa, senior vice president, global packaging, for The Estée Lauder Companies, Inc., was recognized with the Packaging Executive of the Year Award. "Whatever success or recognition that comes my way is really the result of working with very talented people," says Caracappa.

During the IPDA presentation, six products were recognized for their packaging innovation. In the Cosmetics category, Chanel's Artist Palette was selected; in the Skin-Care, Limited Distribution, Futuresse by Biodroga; in Skin-Care, Mass Distribution, reflect.com products by reflect.com; in the Personal Care category, PureOlogy Serious Colour Care by PureOlogy; in Fragrance, Limited, Diesel Green by Marbert; and in Fragrance, Mass Distribution, Velocity by Mary Kay. The Grand Award went to Diesel Green.
