Show Coverage: Pack Expo Las Vegas 2001

img

Designers who visit this year's Pack Expo Las Vegas show will hit the jackpot—more than 700 exhibitors will showcase the latest in packaging components, materials, and machinery. Designers and engineers in the cosmetic, toiletry, soap, and detergent industries will find bottles, labels, fillers, case packers, and more. The show, to be held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center September 1012, will be held in conjunction with the International Exposition for Food Processors (IEFP) trade show. See the bottom of this page for a list of exhibitors of interest to cosmetic and personal care packaging professionals.

Packaging Solutions, a three-day educational conference at the show, will address packagers' specific market needs and issues. Interactive programs will encourage networking and sharing of information. Those who register for the show will automatically be eligible to attend the conference. The presentations will focus on advanced technologies, machine efficiency and line productivity, and e-manufacturing. Conference titles include The Role of Neck Finishes and Headspace for Widemouth PET Containers, Bringing Digital Graphic Arts to Packaging, What's Next for Conversion to PET, and Making Sense of e-Manufacturing. In 1999, 808 attendees participated in the conference.

Pack Expo 2001, held biennially, is sponsored by the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute. A $450 admittance fee provides access to Pack Expo, Packaging Solutions, and IEFP exhibits for all three days of the show. Registration to attend only one day of the show and conference costs $295. EXHIBITOR PRODUCTS

Caps, Closures

-Caps and closures in aluminum and steel range in diameter from 15 to 120 mm and have a 400-mm finish. Various cap styles are available, including continuous-threaded, tamper-evident, child-resistant, and perforation-type designs. The company's Unishell caps are continuous-threaded caps with a higher-end profile. The CapPlug is constructed of metal and plastic and works as an internal friction fitment, enabling the use of a metal closure without requiring a threaded finish on a container. Perforation-style caps include stock designs and the firm's "Daisy" design. Penn-Wheeling Closure LLC, Glen Dale, WV.

Copolyester Plastic

-A high-clarity copolyester designed for durability and optimum resistance to chemicals was used to construct the bottle for the Sephora Collection shower gel. The Eastar copolyester can be injection-molded or blow-molded at a wide range of temperatures without crystallizing. The material allows sharp corners to be molded on containers. Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, TN.

Stretchbander

-A stretchbander operates with or without a shrinktunnel to stretchwrap single items or multipacks with polyethylene film. The patented PEWO-Pack 250 compact stretchbander is designed for ease of operation and allows for a toolless changeover in five minutes. Pester USA Inc., Allendale, NJ.

Vertical Cartoner

A cartoner has closing and opening rates of up to 150 cartons per minute. The CMV II semiautomatic vertical cartoner handles a range of carton sizes, styles, and materials. The unit's quick changeover capabilities allow for flexible production. Each of the 5-, 6-, and 8-in. center models can accommodate a range of carton styles, including reverse- or straight-tuck, fifth panel, and fourth flap types. R. A. Jones & Company, Inc., Cincinnati, OH.

Label Printer-Applicators

-Label printer-applicators print high-resolution labels and can handle a constant workload at speeds up to 12 in./sec. The Model 5200–series systems feature thermal/thermal-transfer printers that print crisp text, in-spec bar codes, and graphics at resolutions of 203 or 300 dpi. The systems can accommodate pressure-sensitive labels up to 6 in. wide and 39 in. long. Weber Marking Systems Inc., Arlington Heights, IL.

Vacuum Filler System

A vacuum filling system designed for perfume products can fill small-mouthed crystal and glass containers with amounts ranging from 5 to 100 ml, with a high degree of dosing accuracy and minimum product loss. Double coaxial pipe nozzles provide suction of excess product, returning the product to the glass bell by means of a pneumatic pump. The product is then recycled and reused. IMA Liquids & Powders Filling Div., Bologna, Italy.

Labeling Systems

-An in-line labeling system is suited for high-speed applications. The Versa- Line can be configured for front and back, wrap, top, bottom, or custom applications at speeds up to 330 ppm. Other printer-applicators come with modules for the application of labels in air-tamp, air-blow, tamp-blow, and wipe-on methods. Pneumatic swinging arms facilitate various applications. Quadrel Labeling Systems, Mentor, OH.
