AIMCAL Awards Recognize Marketing, Technology

The Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters, and Laminators (AIMCAL; Fort Mill, SC) honored converters and their suppliers for their contributions to cosmetic packaging in its 2001 Metallized or Vacuum-Coated Package and Label Competition. In the Healthcare, Toiletries, and Cosmetics category, Proma Technologies (Franklin, MA) won the Marketing Award for its work on a holiday gift package for White Diamonds fragrance.

The Technical Award in the same category went to Hazen Paper Co. (Holyoke, MA) for its role in the packaging of Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Perfume.

Proma Technologies was recognized for metallizing the 60-lb HoloPrism paper for the White Diamonds holiday package. The set-up box features holographic diamonds on a sparkling blue background. The holographic pattern was created by International Holographic Paper (Chalfont, PA), which purchased the paper and coordinated the converting. Hazen Paper Co. performed laminating and rotogravure printing, reversing out two colors.

"The packaging reinforced the White Diamonds name," says Ruth Kemp of Proma Technologies, who also points out that the package is "the first large-scale use of HoloPrism paper for the cosmetic industry."

Hazen Paper Co. was recognized for technical achievement with its participation in the packaging of Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Perfume.

- The metallized box for White Diamonds reflects a holiday theme.

The fragrance carton consists of Hazen Ultracure Acrylic, a lacquered 92-gauge reflector PET laminated with a water-based adhesive to 0.018-in. Avanta Super Board substrate. The extreme smoothness of the Avanta Super Board substrate enhances the mirror-like finish of the package. The heavier gauge of the film enhances the carton's smoothness and gloss and also allows faster laminating speeds. The tight registration of the embossed and printed leaf on the carton gained the judges' attention. International Paper (Clifton, NJ) designed, embossed, and contract packaged the carton. Adherent Technology (Granby, CT) metallized the carton substrate.

"In years past, it was quite difficult to get the type of mirror quality [seen on the Green Tea package] without paying astronomical amounts of money," says Jim Conte of Hazen Paper's technical sales office. "The material is only 1 mil; before, you would have had to go to probably 3 or 4 mil to achieve this quality level."

AIMCAL's package and label competition is held annually, with awards given to the cosmetic and personal care packaging industry, as well as other industries. Judges for the competition are industry professionals.

AIMCAL is an international nonprofit trade association and represents suppliers and converters of metallized, laminated, and coated flexible substrates. For more information about the awards program, visit the Web site at http://www.aimcal.org.

Valois Launches Trial-Dose Spray at Cosmoprof

During a press conference April 6 at the Cosmoprof show in Bologna, Italy, Valois launched its new trial-sized spray package, Clic and Dream. Olivier de Pous, executive vice president of Valois, introduced the sample package, which utilizes a patented device technology to spray 0.25 ml of fragrance, providing as many as five sprays for one-time use.

- The new sample sprayer from Valois dispenses 0.25 ml of frangrance.

"This product is like nothing else on the market," said de Pous, adding that the innovation grew out of Valois's forward-thinking approach. For this project "we created the technology first, then approached clients, rather than going to our clients first to see what they needed," he said.

Clic and Dream operates via a standard mechanism and is composed of a thermoformed shell, a spray insert, a porous filter, and welded film.
A communication area on the package enables manufacturers to insert a customized message on the sample itself, a feature never before possible, according to the company. The packages are supplied filled and decorated.

Valois plans to supply the sprayers starting in July, selling them worldwide through the company.

Established in 1947, Valois designs, manufactures, and markets spraying and dispensing systems for the perfumery and cosmetics industries. For more information on the company and its capabilities, visit http://www.valois.com.

"Cosmetic packaging at this point is unregulated more or less," says Jerome Heckman, a founding partner of the firm. "A lot of cosmetic packagers, however, want to be assured that their packaging meets some kind of standard. Knowing that their packages comply with food and drug packaging laws provides cosmetic packagers with a sense of security," Heckman says.
