Locking Cap

-A cap with a locking feature and a patented low-profile pump were created for the Latitude Longitude fragrance for men by Nautica. The pump, part of the VP4 SealTight family of noncrimp pumps, connects to the cap, which can be turned 90° to open, close, or lock the actuator. The snap-on pump was created for the 50- and 100-ml bottle sizes. Valois of America, Greenwich, CT.

Two-Bottle Concept

-Twin triangular-shaped bottles are connected at the bottom with a single base plate and at the top with a brace that holds the bottles together. The package was created for the Helena Rubinstein Power A antiaging treatment. The packaging features a double-case measuring pump with a single push button. The bottle was decorated with a matte satiny-silver color and a pearlescent surface that is soft and scratch resistant.

Windows on the bottle show the user the amount of the product that remains in the container. The company can find solutions for uniquely shaped bottles in glass, plastic, or metal. Sleever International, Morangis, France.

Hemispheric Design

-A transparent, hemispheric bottle was created for the Sergio Tacchini O.Zone eau de toilette. The glass bottle, which was fitted in a transparent plastic box with a cap and border, was designed without a bottom. Precise molding ensures that the glass container fits tightly in its external frame and that the transparent covering is flush with both faces of the bottle.

The women's bottle has borders and printing in colors reminiscent of wisteria blossoms, and a silver-colored cap. The men's fragrance features blue print, a blue border, and a blue cap. Bormioli Luigi Corp., Langhorne, PA.

Flip-Top Compact

-A round flip-top compact is suitable for shadows, blush, and gloss. The plastic compact features a 36-mm well and a clasp that snaps shut tightly. A wide range of finishes includes color-matched plastic, metallic sprays, and embossing. Cosmopak, New York City.

Nonaerosol Dispenser

Estée Lauder chose the Atmos dispensing system for its Sun Oil Free Sun Spray SPF6, Perfectly Clean Foaming Gel Cleanser, and Perfectly Clean Foaming Lotion Cleanser. The Atmos system is a nonaerosol dispenser that works without chemical propellants. The system features a thin-walled, plastic inner PET bottle with an integrated valve assembly, surrounded by a natural rubber sleeve. The rubber sleeve expands as the inner bottle is filled. When the valve is pushed, the rubber sleeve returns to its normal size, providing a pressurized dispensing system. A hermetic seal reduces the chance for contamination. The system is suitable for a range of product viscosities, including liquids, gels, creams, and postfoaming products. Exxel Container Inc., Somerset, NJ.

PET Bottle

-Chemspa combined a green PET bottle, a fine-mist sprayer, and a label application to create spa-style packaging for its Eucalyptus Aroma Therapy Mist. Also available in cobalt blue or clear PET, the bottle is stocked in 2-, 4-, and 8-oz sizes. A variety of other dispensing closures are available. The supplier also offers plastic, glass, and metal containers. SKS Bottle & Packaging Inc., Mechanicville, NY.

Connectable Bottles

-Travel-sized bottles for the Issima Blue Voyage travel skin-care line by Guerlain were designed to house moisturizer, body oil, and makeup remover. The 10-ml bottles can be linked together for the ease of transport using a lateral sliding attachment system. Customers can choose which bottles they want to link together. Techpack America, New York City.

Reclosable Samples

-A supplier's reclosable sample package has housed products by Stila, Burt's Bees, Amlika, and Aveeno. The Xela Pack has an orifice that can be pinched closed once the package is opened, making it suitable for single and multiple applications. Available in sizes ranging from 5 to 30 ml, the package incorporates a three-layer construction, offering good barrier properties.

The semirigid paper provides a surface well suited for printed graphics. The package can be designed to stand upright. Xela Pack Inc., Bridgewater, MI.

Talisman Concept

A bottle representing a talisman was designed for the Guerlain Mahora eau de toilette for women. The front of the 75-ml bottle features a UV-sealed beaten-gold plastron; an amber stopper adds to the talisman concept. The spherical portion of the bottle bulges outward slightly at the back. Other bottles in the line are 5, 10, 30, and 50 ml. Saint-Gobain Desjonquères, Courbevoie, France.

Aluminum Bottles

-The Aluminum Collection line includes five brushed-aluminum bottles in sizes ranging from 2 to 10 oz. The bottles can be supplied with such aluminum components as screw caps, lotion pumps, and spray pumps. The closures have a 24-410 neck finish.

Packaging components can be ordered by the pallet, as well as in small quantities. Plastic screw caps, lotion pumps, and spray pumps in black or white are also available. O. Berk International Inc., Union, NJ.

Transport-Friendly Design

Procter & Gamble chose an award-winning clamshell design for its Oil of Olay moisturizer. To ensure that the clamshell would withstand handling during transport, the design team devised a system of three separate undercuts to hold the jar snugly in the back of the clamshell and to keep the jar facing the right way in the package. Small vacuum holes and a highly polished mold give the clamshell a clear front surface for maximum visibility of the product inside. Creative Forming Inc., Ripon, WI.

Low-Profile Pump

-A super low-profile pump was supplied for the Unavailable fragrance by Blue Q. Low-actuation force and good spray characteristics are features of the pump, which incorporates the company's Crimpless system, a patented press-on technology.

The pump was supplied for the 30-ml bottle. The company also manufactured the black metal actuator and the collar components. Risdon-AMS, Watertown, CT.

Slender Silhouette

-A bottle was created for the Origins Ginger Essence Sensuous Skin scent. The container was designed to have a slender shape. The bottle's aesthetics match the packaging of the other products in the Origins line. Dieter Bakic Design, Munich, Germany.

Amphora-Shaped Container

-Elizabeth Arden's Flawless Finish Concealer is packaged in a stock polypropylene container reminiscent of an amphora, with an anodized metal cap. Technical challenges during production included silk-screening and hot-stamping on the container's concave walls.

The container's surface was finished with a "gold dust" spray; a gold hot-stamped band adorns the bottle's top. Henlopen—Techpack America, New York City.

Translucent Resin

-A translucent, scratch-resistant resin was used to create the container for the Issey Miyake Le Feu d'Issey fragrance, which launched in 1999. The Eastar AN004 copolyester resin provides high clarity, a glossy appearance, and resistance to perfumes.

The resin was molded into two bowl-shaped pieces that were ultrasonically welded together to form the Le Feu d'Issey container. The round container was then fitted around the fragrance bottle. Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, TN.

Elegant Decoration

-Containers with strong visual appeal and regal overtones were chosen for the Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia Mon Ange bath and body fragrance line. Packaging includes round bottles of natural high-density polyethylene with elegant faceted closures; deep-blue tubes with a satiny finish, gold stamping, and a blue dispensing closure;

pearlescent ivory tubes screened in gold and navy with a pearlescent dispensing closure; and a personal-sized glass candle holder etched in deep blue. The product line includes a luxury body lotion, powder, hand cream, and a scented candle. Expac Corp., Montvale, NJ.
