Bijan With A Twist

Bijan's first fragrance since the mid-80s is a packaging tour de force.

Vice-President of creative Daniela Pakzad provided a sneak preview of the line in New York in October. The line consists of a 50ml EDP retailing for $65, a 100ml EDP for $90, a 15ml perfume for $225 and a 6.8oz. body lotion for $45.

The packaging links the fragrances to the opulence of Bijan's renowned Beverly Hills boutique. The same sunshine yellow motif of the shop appears in the cartons and tubes. Dozens of other details show that luxury is Bijan's stock and trade, both in fashion and frgrances.

Pakzad was responsible for packaging the newest line from the world's most expensive designer. The bottles have movable gold coils that represent bracelets. The caps are clear Surlyn™ and represent the jewelry found in the boutique. Pakzad insisted that the same attention to detail went into all three bottle sizes. "There was no weaker or water-downed design and/or cheaper or less components used for the 50ml and 100ml to keep the cost of goods down. The movable rings on all three sizes are dipped in 14kt gold," says Pakzad.

Intricate Carton

The details engineered into the packaging can be seen by the cartons produced by Bellshire, Toronto, Canada. The Bijan custom sunburst yellow color is printed on Invercoat board stock with mate lamination and with in-line coating for the reverse side. The board is printed with a four-color process with two colors hot-stamped in mate and shiny gold. Three various sizes of a sculptured/multilevel brass dye will be used for the embossing area of the packaging to emulate the movable rings on the bottle. A custom cream-colored micro-flute will be produced for the inside lining.

Bellshire also produced the secondary outer packaging for the perfume. A fabric-covered cylindrical set-up box is also being manufactured in partnership with O E Clark. Gold wired bands (55 total per box) are placed around the body of the lid as well as 10 gold rings on the top of the lid to hold a micro-mini pleated imported paper that emulates a fanning effect. "No detail was spared for the line," says Pakzad.

The caps and custom pumps and collars for the fragrances are supplied by Risdon-AMS, Thormaston, CT. The 50ml and 100ml glass bottles are supplied by Bormioli Luigi from Italy. The 15ml bottles are also supplied by Bormioli Luigi from its factory in Spain. The bottom flange to keep the movable rings on the glass is supplied by Augros, Clark, NJ.

Bijan Fragrances takes pride in the fact that it maintains a healthy business in spite of its reluctance to issue new brands. The level of detail given to Bijan With A Twist shows attention to design pays dividends for years-perhaps decades-to come.
