Origins' sleep enhancing line takes usage into account when designing packaging.

Origins, New York, NY, has always employed sensory therapy as a mainstay of its brand, according to Page Marcel, manager, global communications. The launch of its Sensory Therapy® line employs aromatherapy to address the sleep problems disturbing some 70 million Americans. Following two years of research including consulting with sleep experts, Origins designed this collection for people looking for alternative solutions to address their sleep problems. "The line has really spoken to everyone-mothers, college students-everyone who has some sort of sleep problem," says Marcel.

There are seven products in the line: settle down-™ nighttime digestive tea, float away™ sleep-enhancing milk bath, call it a night™ sleep-deepening body lotion, sleep perchance to dream™ pillow mist, sleeptime™ on-the-spot gel, resume the position™ back-to-sleep bedside diffuser and night music™ sleep CD. Violet-blue was chosen as the color to represent the collection. It depicts the color of the night sky and "evokes a feeling of restfulness," says Marcel. To further unify the collection, a logo was created specifically for the line. The original Origins logo was taken and wrapped with a crescent moon to allow for easy reference. "You immediately know what it [the product] is for," notes Marcel.

Dreamy Packaging

Dreamy Packaging Material for the packaging was chosen for ease of use. "The products were designed to be easy to use in the middle of the night when in bed," says Marcel. While the float away sleep-enhancing milk bath is designed to be used before retiring to the bedroom, usage was also taken into consideration when choosing packaging materials. It is packaged in violet-blue, 16.9 fl. oz. PET bottles. The PET not only prevents broken glass in the bathroom but also provides a 100 percent recyclable bottle, meeting Origins' environmental requirements. The violet-blue bottles are supplied by The Cosmetic Packaging Group, a division of O. Berk Co., Union, NJ, and manufactured by Alpha Plastics, St. Louis, MO. Alpha custom-matched the color to Origins' specifications and used an existing mold. The Cosmetic Packaging Group also coordinates the decorating and supplies the silver cap to top off the packaging. The bottles were decorated with pressure sensitive labels until Alpha Plastics altered its tooling, allowing the bottles to be silk-screened with three colorsÑwhite, blue and black.

"The response [to the line] has been beyond expectation," says Marcel. Consumers and judges alike are responding positively to the line. Origins won the FiFi award for the Bath and Body Star of the Year, awarded by the Fragrance Foundation. In addition, consumers keep coming back for more for themselves, friends and family. "What is better than the gift of sleep?" says Marcel.
