Introducing Innovations

"I want something different." Everyone in packaging recites this plea at one point or another. It's hard to create packaging under a tight budget and in a short time frame. It's harder still to create a unique slant for every new sku.

To help in this quest for new ideas, Cosmetic/Personal Care Packaging is proud to introduce Innovations, a new regular section in the magazine. Innovations will feature packaging and components that are in their prototype stages or have been recently introduced. The goal is idea stimulation: read Innovations for a glimpse of something out of the ordinary. If you can't wait for the next issue, look up Innovations' items on the Cosmetic/Personal Care Packaging website, .

Plastic Surge

imgInnovations will show you how to take advantage of trends. Take the boom in plastics. Of the estimated 56 billion pack units used by the cosmetics & toiletries industry in 1998, approximately 55 percent were made of plastic. By the year 2005, it is estimated that the number of pack units will have grown to 73 billion, with plastic accounting for 61 percent according to World Cosmetics & Toiletries Packaging 2000-2005 from MTI Ltd, London, England.

So how can you ride the plastic wave? Han Hean USA, Edison, NJ introduced an avante garde package in plastic at the recent HBA Expo in New York. Han Hean introduced Atomizer Pens molded from polypropylene in 14 colors. The pens illustrate what Innovations is all about.

Each pen holds 4.5ml of fragrance. Removing the overcap allows customers to spray the fragrance. The nozzle is made from acetal co-polymer, the actuator from PP and the stem and piston from polyethylene. The pen measures 120.45mm in height and 12.25mm in width, perfect for the backpacks of grade schoolers everywhere.

There are two models. One fills from the top and features a snap-on pump, the other comes with a pre-assembled pump and fills from the bottom. Neither model is refillable.

The pens are available in translucent and opaque colors. In general, the translucent colors with the glitter finish are the style that appeal to the young consumer.

The Atomizer pens are no larger than a regular fountain pen. A flexible clip on the overcap gives the atomizer pen more functionality than a regular fragrance bottle and as any savvy youth and teen marketer knows, function is nearly as important as style.

The price point of the complete atomizer pen is much lower than refillable atomizers. The price makes the pens a suitable sampling vehicle. For example, the Atomizer Pen can be used as a sampler in lieu of glass vials or sachets. Consumers feel they are receiving more of a gift than a trial sample. Innovations will regularly feature several packaging concepts like the Atomizer Pen. Ideas are welcome: send your Innovation to info@cpcpkg.com.
